Rafael Nadal plays down back injury at French Open

The world number one – chasing his ninth French Open crown in 10 years at Roland Garros – wasted little time in a 6-2 7-5 6-2 triumph over the Argentinian on the clay of Court Philippe Chatrier.

In the aftermath of that success, Nadal conceded that he was suffering with a back problem, but was keen not to dwell on the issue.

“Well, I’d rather not talk about my back,” he said. “I’ve reached week number two.

“I’ll do my best. I’ll play as best as I can.
“I’ll put up a good fight to try and win. You know, my back is not that important. It’s not that important, because I wouldn’t really like to give you too many details.

“I am the way I am, and I’m happy to have reached this level. I won a three-set match, which is important.”

Nadal’s victory brings an end to his first week of the tournament, and he reflected on a solid start in Paris.

He added: “It was a positive. I have three matches that I think I played under control.

“That’s always positive and good. Always (being in) the second week is great news, and winning in straight sets is a little bit better. I’m happy for that.”

Nadal will now face Dusan Lajovic for a spot in the quarter-finals.
