The Public Accounts Committee has chided the Ghana Education Service for failing to supervise heads of second cycle institutions in Ashanti.

Chairman of the Committee, Kwaku Agyeman Manu says inadequate oversight has resulted in many heads abusing their powers and breaching procurement rules.

The committee continues to sit for the fourth day in Kumasi, probing the 2010-2011 accounts of second cycle institutions in the region.

Issues ranging payment of unearned salaries, purchase without document and breach of procurement acts in the various institutions.

A situation which the committee revealed was evident in 75 percent of the schools queried.

Eighteen pre-tertiary institutions across the region on various queries leveled against them by auditors.

Vice Chairman of the Committee, Attah Achia tells Luv News the recurring nature of such issues points to deliberate attempts to siphon public money.

He however wants the Ghana Education Service to be proactive and save the face of its institution.

Regional Director of Education, Kofi Sarfo Kantanka accepted the committee’s advice to allow various institutional boards to review financial reports quarterly.

He is positive this will help address the situation.
