Professionals posted to MMDAs for capacity building
The professionals, including human resource personnel, internal auditors, planners, procurement officers, engineers and administrators, have consequently been posted to the various assemblies, particularly the newly created ones which are in dire need of professionals.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, the Head of the LGS, Dr Callistus Mahama, said all the 2,600 personnel were undergoing training to better equip them and adequately orient them for the task ahead.
The MMDAs have a responsibility to provide, among others, schools, hospitals, good roads, markets, sound sanitation and a generally conducive environment to enable both social and business activities to thrive.
According to Dr Mahama, 7,600 people applied for the job, but 2,600 was shortlisted after examination and interviews.
He explained that work at the assemblies required adequate and competent professionals committed to achieving results, hence the exercise.
The service, he hinted, was awaiting clearance from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MoFEP) to recruit an additional 2,500 professionals to strengthen the capacity of the MMDAs to improve on their service delivery.
The LGS recently carried out a nationwide re-posting exercise, in which about 3,000 professionals of various classes were moved.
There are 216 MMDAs, with a workforce of about 50,000.
