The campaign team of Paul Afoko, aspiring National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), was on Saturday morning involved in an accident close to Fufulso in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region.

The team was returning to Tamale from Damongo, the West Gonja District Capital, and on reaching Fufulso junction, the accident occurred.

The black Toyata Landcruiser with registration number NR 9999 X among the convoy of vehicles belonging to former Water Resources, Works and Housing Minister, Alhaji Abubakar Siddique Boniface, bumped into a pothole and skidded off the road.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver at this point lost control of the vehicle which hit a big tree on the shoulder of the road before coming to a complete halt.

The driver, who was the only occupant in the vehicle according to the former minister, was pulled out with the support of the others and rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital where he has since been treated and discharged.

Mr. Afoko is up north to calm down supporters whom he claimed were preparing to travel to the party’s headquarters in Accra to demonstrate against his disqualification from running the race.

He has since met with various support groups and opinion leaders in the three regions and appealed to them to remain calm and not do anything untoward as the matter was being addressed.

According to him, he was still in the race and appealed to supporters throughout the country not to be downhearted by the reports but rather continue to back him until congress was over.

The aspirant took the opportunity to rebut media reports that the treatment meted out to him was because he is a northerner, noting that there are more northerners within the NPP.

The issue about the NPP being an Akan party, he explained, was a propaganda tool used by the National Democratic Congress to incite northerners against the party, stating it was not going to wash.
