After turning in a faultless display on Friday, 2013 winner Joost Luiten was in similarly impressive form as he posted a round of 66 to climb four places to first – two strokes clear of home favourite Bernd Wiesberger, the 2012 champion.

Luiten’s day got off to a superb start as he birdied the first for a third round in a row, and he gained four more shots to turn in 31.

A bogey on 14 was the only blemish during Luiten’s best round of the tournament so far, and further birdies on 15 and 17 – the latter courtesy of a sensational 40-foot putt – secured the overnight lead for the Dutchman.

Wiesberger is targeting qualification for the US Open this week, and has certainly put himself in a promising position to regain the title he won on home soil in 2012.

After picking up four birdies on the front nine, the Austrian gained two more shots before the end of his round to surge seven places up the leaderboard.

Fabrizio Zanotti remains third, a stroke further back, while overnight leader Mikael Lundberg shot 76 to slip down to fifth.

England’s David Horsey made huge inroads as he posted a new course record of 65 to end the day six strokes behind Luiten.

“With no wind, not a cloud in the sky, it was ideal scoring conditions,” he said. “It’s been coming for a while to be honest, I’ve been hitting it nicely on the range and just not quite been able to take it out on the golf course.

“I just stuck to my process a little more I suppose, went out not really thinking about anything other than myself and managed to hit a lot of good shots and hole some nice putts. I’ve been putting well for a while, just not been giving myself birdie putts.”
