New drivers needed – Arthur Kennedy leans on Bawumia’s bus analogy to call for NPP overhaul

0

Former NPP presidential aspirant, Dr. Arthur Kennedy, is using striking political metaphors to spotlight what he sees as the party’s urgent need for renewal and leadership reform after its 2024 election defeat.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Dr. Kennedy referenced Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s now-famous “bus” analogy — a metaphor for the party’s internal structure and strategic direction.

If religion was a factor, I would’ve stepped aside – Dr Bawumia warns against tribal politics in NPP

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against resorting to religious and tribal sentiments as the party gears up for its 2026 presidential primaries and the 2028 general elections.

Addressing the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, June 21, Dr Bawumia described recent attempts to inject religious and ethnic bias into the party’s internal politics as “very dangerous” and a threat to the unity and strength of the NPP.

“It is very, very important that we don’t allow people to come in with explanations that are not factual, that are made up, and that divide our party,” he said.

“We are a united party, encompassing people from all ethnic groups, all religions… We are part of the elephant family.”

Dr Bawumia noted that findings from the Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye Constitutional Committee Report and other research show clearly that religion and ethnicity did not influence the outcome of the 2024 elections.

“My 4.7 million votes, was it only Muslims who voted for me? It’s not possible. They were all different voters,” he stressed.

He rejected the notion that a candidate’s faith should determine their electability and expressed disappointment in those attempting to use religion or tribalism to gain political advantage within the party.

“If that was the case, I wouldn’t have contested at all. I would have stepped aside because I’m not a selfish person. I value the party…. I will not jeopardise the ability of the party to win the 2028 election. It’s too important. I would have stepped aside,” he said.

The remarks come amid increasing speculation and internal jostling within the NPP ahead of the January 2026 presidential primaries.

Dr Bawumia is widely considered a frontrunner in the race and has consistently positioned himself as a candidate who prioritises party unity and national cohesion over personal ambition.

Mahama wasted early opportunity to fight galamsey – Prof. Bokpin

0

Professor Godfred Bokpin, a Finance and Economics Lecturer at the University of Ghana, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as a lack of urgency in tackling illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—during the first six months of his current administration.

Prof. Bokpin argued that although six months may seem a short period, the President had enough executive power and political goodwill early in his tenure to launch bold interventions against the escalating environmental threat.

“Six months is too short, but you know what? Six months has also been long enough for the president to demonstrate. Do we need like three years to declare a state of emergency? How many years do we need to repeal the L.I, which they all agreed in opposition that they ought to go?” he questioned in an interview on Joy FM.

Prof. Bokpin suggested that the same level of resolve shown by the Mahama administration in stabilising the economy should have been directed toward curbing illegal mining. He warned that continued inaction could have dire international repercussions for Ghana, including the risk of an ethical boycott of its gold exports.

He urged the government to show stronger political will in confronting galamsey and to implement decisive reforms to restore public confidence in the country’s environmental governance systems.

Western Region records 71% of Ghana’s Mpox cases, Health alert issued

0

The Western Regional Health Directorate has triggered its public health emergency response system following a sharp rise in Monkeypox cases, with the region now accounting for 71% of all confirmed cases nationwide.

The announcement was made at the Western Regional Development Retreat held in Essipong, Sekondi-Takoradi, on Saturday, June 21, where health officials disclosed alarming statistics. Chief Pharmacist of the Regional Health Directorate, Kwadwo Okyere Apenteng, speaking on behalf of the Regional Health Director, revealed that the Western Region recorded its first Monkeypox case on May 23 in Tarkwa.

“Monkeypox is also in the country, and currently, the Western Region is number one; we have taken over. 71% of the cases in the country are coming from the Western Region. As it stands, we have 187 suspected cases and 43 confirmed cases,” he said.

He added that the Directorate is intensifying surveillance and public education as part of a broader emergency response strategy to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.

The outbreak has sparked renewed concerns over the region’s health infrastructure. Addressing the same event, Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson stressed the urgent need to strengthen healthcare systems and complete stalled health projects—particularly the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

“Our regional hospital in Effia Nkwanta is undergoing some revamping, but as we speak, the work is stalled. I pray that, very soon, work will resume so that we can complete it for the very purpose for which that project was started,” he noted.

The Regional Minister also called on the Western Regional House of Chiefs to support advocacy efforts to upgrade key health facilities and bolster the region’s preparedness for future health emergencies.

First batch of pilgrims from Mecca arrives in Tamale

0

The first batch of Ghanaian pilgrims returning from Mecca landed at the Yakubu Tali International Airport in Tamale, Northern Region, amidst loud cheers and praise for President John Dramani Mahama and his government for their unwavering support to the Muslim community in Ghana.

Approximately 664 pilgrims arrived around 5:00 pm on Friday, June 20, to a rousing welcome led by the Chairman of the Hajj Board, Collins Dauda, alongside the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, and the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

Excited family members and friends lined up for over a kilometre outside the airport premises to welcome the returnees, singing praises to Allah and chanting in celebration.

A visibly cheerful Mr. Dauda commended President Mahama for his continued support and dedication to the Muslim community.

“We are extremely grateful to President Mahama for his commitment and support to Muslims in Ghana. He has never disappointed us. I always say that President Mahama is a blessing to the Ummah in Ghana,” he stated.

He also praised all stakeholders for a successful Hajj process and thanked the pilgrims for representing Ghana with exemplary conduct throughout their journey.

Mr. Dauda further disclosed that all Ghanaian pilgrims are expected to return home by June 27, stating, “By the 27th of June, every pilgrim from Ghana would have arrived.”

In total, about 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims are being airlifted directly from the Holy Land via seven separate flights scheduled between June 20 and June 27, 2025.

“This is the first batch we are welcoming in Tamale. Tomorrow, there will be another flight; the next day, one more. On the fourth day, there will be the fifth flight, and two more flights on the fifth day, making a total of seven. After that, we move to Accra,” Mr. Dauda explained.

He attributed the remarkable success of the 2025 Hajj to President Mahama’s direct involvement, noting, “For the first time in the history of Hajj organisation, the President provided the white garments (Ihram) used by male pilgrims for free. This has never happened before, and we owe it a duty to say, ‘Allah bless and keep President John Mahama safe.’”

He added that all flights departing from Tamale were fully booked and operated according to schedule without any delays.

“We had a successful Hajj. From Medina to Mecca, then to Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifah, Jamarat, and finally returning to Mecca, all movements went smoothly.”

Northern Regional Minister Adolf Ali also commended the Hajj effort, stating that this year’s smooth operations have silenced critics of President Mahama and the NDC.

“This year’s Hajj has silenced all critics. No one can genuinely say anything negative about our efforts. This was a peaceful and historic Hajj. I commend all Hajj staff and pilgrims for the teamwork that led to the joy we see on their faces today,” he said.

Police arrest 8 at Ayanfuri over galamsey, illicit drugs

0

Eight individuals have been arrested by the Central North Regional Police Command for engaging in illegal mining activities and illicit drug peddling at Ayanfuri in the Central Region.

This forms part of the command’s sustained efforts to crack down on illegal mining and related crimes.

The individuals arrested include five Ghanaians identified as Isaac Odum, 39, and Lazarus Sango, 44, believed to be the owners of the site. Other Ghanaian suspects include Stephen Nkrumah, 30; Kofi Emmanuel, 23; and John Nkrumah, 27.

Three Burkinabe nationals, Sulemana Naaba, 36; Benjamin Adibanga, 29; and Iddis Rogo, 30, were also arrested at the site.

The team seized five pumping machines, two rubber bowls containing sand, a gasoline generator, and a gallon of cyanide, a deadly chemical commonly used in illegal mining.

At a news conference, DCOP Abraham Acquaye told Citi News that all the suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned before court for further action.

However, he noted that the Central North Regional Command’s efforts to combat illegal mining are being hindered by the inactivity of the Assin Fosu District Court, which has been non-operational for over four months due to the judge’s indisposition.

DCOP Acquaye explained that as a result, the police have been left with no option but to grant bail to suspects in galamsey-related cases. However, the command says it will not relent on its efforts to crack down on galamsey in the area.

The IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed over 60 personnel from the National Headquarters to assist the Central North Regional Command in effectively combating the menace of illegal mining.

DCOP Acquaye, therefore, urged the public to provide timely information to support efforts in clamping down on other criminal activities, including drug trafficking.

Kwabenya Manye Rallies Behind King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Dismisses Contender’s Claims

The Kwabenya Manye, Naa Koikoi Dugbatey II, has issued a strong endorsement of the current Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, while dismissing his rival, Adama Latse, as an ineffective leader during his time in office.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, June 18, the Kwabenya Manye praised King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II for his transformative leadership, citing the construction of schools and numerous developmental projects across Greater Accra and beyond.

“The Ga people have witnessed unprecedented progress under King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II,” she declared. “Unlike his predecessor, Adama Latse, who did little to advance our communities, the current Ga Mantse has demonstrated a clear commitment to development.”

Call for Unity and Warning to Detractors
Naa Koikoi Dugbatey II also highlighted the Ga Mantse’s role in fostering peace between the Ga and Ashanti kingdoms. She noted that under the leadership of the current Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, longstanding tensions were resolved, paving the way for the historic visit of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to the Ga Traditional Area.

“The Ga people have moved forward, and we will not allow anyone to disrupt the peace and progress we now enjoy,” she warned. She cautioned detractors of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II to desist from undermining his reign or face “the wrath of the ancestors and the living.”

Challenge to Adama Latse
In a direct challenge to the former Ga Mantse, Naa Koikoi Dugbatey II demanded that Adama Latse provide evidence of any developmental projects he initiated during his reign.

“If Adama Latse claims to have been a leader of substance, let him show the people what he achieved. The records are clear—King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has done more for the Ga State in a few years than his predecessor did in his entire reign,” she asserted.

Support for Continuity
The Kwabenya Manye urged Ga traditional leaders and citizens to rally behind King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, emphasizing that his leadership is vital for the continued growth of the Ga State.

“The Ga people deserve progress, unity, and strong leadership. King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has proven himself, and we stand firmly behind him,” she concluded.

The press conference has further intensified the debate over Ga traditional leadership, with supporters of the current Ga Mantse calling for an end to what they describe as “needless distractions” from rival factions.

“All these kids can play; what is impressive is their attitude and that’s the beginning of a champion, having the right attitude.”

“These kids are great, there’s a lot of talent here, there’s a lot of talent so with the coaches now understanding and learning how to develop that talent, is the key…and that’s what we are here to do” Smith said.

On his part, coach Joseph Doe-Adjayni stated, “It’s been very educative. Taking the children through [the sessions], we realized a lot of their mistakes and tried to correct and I believe once we are able to take them and use them, they are going to become good players.”

Nations FC right-back Victor Oduro completes medical ahead of three-year move with Asante Kotoko

0

Asante Kotoko are set to announce the signing of right-back Victor Oduro, who has successfully completed his medical ahead of a three-year deal with the Porcupine Warriors.

The 24-year-old defender, who joined Nations FC from Dreams FC last season, underwent his medical examination on Saturday and is expected to sign his contract on Monday, according to close sources.

Oduro will be reunited with his former coach Abdul Karim Zito, who played a pivotal role in his development during their time together at Dreams FC.

The move comes as part of Kotoko’s squad restructuring ahead of the 2025/26 season, with Oduro expected to fill the void left by Adrian Adjetey, who was recently released by the club.

Oduro made nine appearances for Nations FC during the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League campaign, showing glimpses of his defensive solidity and ability to contribute to attack from the flanks.

At Kotoko, he will compete with Lord Amoah for the starting right-back role as the club aims to build a solid defensive line under the guidance of coach Abdul Karim Zito.

Patronise local products to create jobs – Agric Minister tells Ghanaians

0

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has called on Ghanaians to actively support the country’s agricultural value chain by choosing locally produced goods over imported alternatives.

He warned that the continued preference for foreign products is undermining national efforts to boost employment and strengthen the economy.

Speaking at Channel One TV’s AgriFair at the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra on Saturday June 21, he said Ghanaian farmers and processors are doing their part by producing and adding value to agricultural products, but their efforts are being frustrated by the low patronage from local consumers.

“The biggest challenge that confronts us as a nation is not from the government—it is from the people of Ghana,” he said.

“When you look at the farmers, they have produced. The processors have added value. But the Ghanaian consumers will go to the market and choose foreign products against what is produced here,” he added.

He noted that such consumer behavior fuels job creation in other countries at the expense of Ghana’s own workforce.

“If you do that, your expenditure is creating jobs elsewhere while your own people are suffering,” he stressed.

Mr Opoku emphasised that every cedi spent on Ghanaian-made products contributes to job creation and national development. He urged the public to develop a sense of responsibility and national pride by supporting locally made goods.

“What we must do now is to get our people to understand that every expenditure made on a Ghanaian product goes to increase job opportunities for our own people. So if you want our people to be in gainful employment, let’s patronise what is produced here in Ghana,” he explained.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that an old storey building collapsed on Saturday morning, June 21, following torrential rains in the Cape Coast Metropolis, killing two elderly men and injuring another.

In a statement issued after the incident, the police indicated that the building, made of bricks and located adjacent to the “London Bridge” at Ashanti Road in Cape Coast, gave way around 8:00 am as heavy downpour battered the area.

Three people were trapped under the rubble.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service, NADMO, the Ambulance Service, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, and police rushed to the scene to begin rescue efforts.

The assembly provided earth-moving machines to help clear the debris.

Mahama's resetting agenda proves his problem-solving acumen – JB Danquah

0

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant for Subin constituency, Joseph Boakye Danquah, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for what he termed as a demonstrable commitment to put Ghana on a good footing, just 6 months into his governance.

According to the politician and tax accountant, President Mahama has indicated that he wants to indeed solve problems.

Sharing his thoughts on a wide range of issues bothering on Ghana politics, JB Danquah stated that, he is impressed by the initiatives the NDC has rolled out since it took power in January, 2025.

He made these remarks in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb on June 21, 2025.

“As you rightly stated, my name is Joseph Boakye Danquah. So, definitely, I belong to the JB Danquah tradition but to me, Ghana comes first before any political party.

“I do not care what political party it is? If you’re doing something good, I will praise you. If you’re doing something bad. It doesn’t matter which political party you belong to. I will condemn you. So far, with President Mahama, I think he is doing very well.

“I’m impressed with what he is doing? He has given the indication that he wants to solve problems. He has given indications that he is not the John Mahama we used to know or for business as usual but he is here to solve problems,” the former Subin parliamentary aspirant said.

In another breadth, JB Danquah backed calls for the review of the 1992 Constitution.

In his estimation, the current Constitution of Ghana is riddled with too many lacunas that ought to be plugged.

He particularly, noted that the 1992 Constitution gives the executive too much power and hence needs to be reshaped for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Review BoG, fiscal laws to strengthen economy – Prof. Hadrat Yusif

0

A Professor of Economics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Mohammed Hadrat Yusif, has called for a comprehensive review of key economic governance laws to enhance fiscal discipline and improve monetary policy effectiveness in Ghana.

He wants both the Bank of Ghana Act and Fiscal Responsibility Act amended—citing the 10% borrowing cap and 5% deficit limit as outdated constraints on fiscal flexibility.

According to Prof. Hadrat Yusif, these legal provisions have not effectively compelled governments to exercise prudent fiscal management.

Delivering his professorial inaugural lecture on the theme “Monetary Policy in Ghana: Revisiting the Tobin Model,” he argued that weak compliance with these laws has undermined Ghana’s macroeconomic stability.

He also urged the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to deepen collaboration with universities and research institutions to develop innovative, data-driven strategies for more effective monetary policy implementation.

“The BoG should work with academic and research institutions to develop creative research programmes that respond to its pressing needs,” he said.

As part of his wide-ranging recommendations, Prof. Hadrat Yusif proposed the promotion of public-private partnerships (PPPs) for infrastructure development, which he believes would ease the fiscal burden on government, inject innovation, and speed up project execution.

He also stressed the need for stronger support for local businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to enable them to harness the full benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He recommended cost-effective funding schemes for SMEs, citing the Bank of England’s Term Funding Scheme as a model worth emulating.

On monetary policy, Prof. Hadrat Yusif called for a shift from inflation targeting to nominal GDP targeting, suggesting it would better align monetary goals with real economic growth.

“Nominal GDP targeting — which involves setting a target for the growth rate of nominal GDP (inflation plus real GDP growth) — could help stabilize the labour market, increase real output, and strengthen the financial system,” he explained.

He was, however, critical of political interference in the central bank’s operations, stating:

“Monetary policy in Ghana has largely failed, but the blame should not rest solely on the Bank of Ghana. There has been consistent Ministry of Finance dominance over the BoG since independence. For monetary policy to succeed, the central bank must operate with true independence.”

Prof. Hadrat Yusif concluded by calling on the government to prioritise building economic resilience, ensuring price and interest rate stability, and taking deliberate steps to define Ghana’s economic future.

Nkwanta South MCE pays courtesy call on National Chief Imam, seeks prayers for peace

Joseph Antwi (L) visited the National Chief Imam Dr Sheikh Sharabutu (R) Joseph Antwi (L) visited the National Chief Imam Dr Sheikh Sharabutu (R)

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, Joseph Awal Antwi, has paid a special courtesy call on the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, to formally introduce himself and seek spiritual support for the people of his municipality.

The meeting, which took place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the residence of the revered Islamic leader in Accra, was marked by a deep sense of reverence, humility, and unity of purpose.

The visit comes at a crucial time for Nkwanta South, a municipality in the Oti Region that has witnessed occasional unrest in recent times.

Awal Antwi, in his remarks, expressed his deep respect for the National Chief Imam and acknowledged the critical role religious leaders play in fostering peace and national cohesion.

“Your Eminence, I am honoured to be in your presence today. As the new Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, I felt it was important to formally introduce myself and seek your prayers and blessings.

“We are determined to promote peace and development in our municipality, and your spiritual support means a lot to us,” he said.

He further appealed to the Chief Imam to remember Nkwanta South in his prayers, especially in light of the challenges the area has faced over the years.

“Nkwanta South is a land of great potential, but we have faced some difficulties in recent times. I humbly ask that you continue to intercede for us so that peace and understanding may prevail among our people,” Antwi added.

The National Chief Imam, visibly pleased with the visit, responded with warmth and fatherly guidance.

He commended the MCE for showing humility and initiative by seeking divine guidance and support from traditional and religious leaders early in his tenure.

“I am touched by your visit, my son. The fact that you have come here not just as a leader, but as someone who seeks peace for his people, is commendable.

“I will certainly offer my prayers for Nkwanta South and ask Allah to bless your leadership with wisdom, patience, and success,” he said.

Sheikh Sharubutu further encouraged the MCE to uphold justice, fairness, and inclusiveness in his administration.

According to him, leaders who prioritize the welfare of all, regardless of ethnic or religious background, are those who leave lasting legacies.

“Continue to lead with a heart of peace and sincerity. When people see fairness, they embrace peace. I will always be here to support any leader who stands for harmony and national unity,” the Imam advised.

The meeting was also attended by a few close aides and advisors of both the Chief Imam and the MCE, who observed the proceedings with great admiration.

The MCE also used the opportunity to pledge his readiness to work closely with all religious and traditional leaders in the municipality to promote dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and community development.

“Development can only thrive where there is peace. That is why we are prioritizing unity in Nkwanta South. We are one people, and we must learn to coexist and work together for our collective good,” he stressed.

Antwi, who assumed office recently, has been embarking on a series of stakeholder engagements to introduce himself to key national and regional figures while outlining his development vision for the people of Nkwanta South.

His visit to the National Chief Imam marks a significant step in building national-level alliances to support his mission of inclusive governance and grassroots empowerment.

This engagement is a clear signal that he values spiritual guidance and is committed to fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and mutual respect in governance.

Former NPP Executive Exposes Sticka’s Dangerous Hatred Towards Bawumia Over Ministerial Appointment

News Hub Creator5h

Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Stephen Amoah, also known as Sticka, has faced heavy criticism following remarks he made about religion, resource distribution, and political discrimination in Ghana as reported by MyNewsGH on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

Speaking to TESCON students in Kumasi, Dr. Amoah claimed that Muslims are often denied leadership roles in Ghana, citing their supposed “divine link” to resource-rich areas globally.

However, former party executive Ahkbar Yussif Rohullah accused Dr. Amoah of bitterness coming from his failure to secure the Finance Minister role.

Rohullah revealed that Dr. Amoah, frustrated after Dr. Mohammed Amin Anta was appointed to the position instead of him, had allegedly directed his anger at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the decision.

“Sticka believes being a Christian made him a better candidate than Dr. Amin,” Rohullah stated, calling his mindset a “dangerous” threat to the party.

Rohullah strongly defended Dr. Anta’s appointment, describing him as far superior in both experience and service to the NPP.

He further warned that Dr. Amoah’s remarks posed a threat to the unity of the party, urging the General Secretary of the NPP to take swift action to address what he termed “dangerous rhetoric.”

If religion was a factor, I would’ve stepped aside – Dr Bawumia warns against divisive politics in NPP

Current NPP executives must go for fresh mandate – Arthur Kennedy

0

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Dr. Arthur Kennedy, has urged the party’s current national executives to seek a fresh mandate ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Dr. Kennedy stressed that this call is not necessarily a critique of their performance but a vital democratic step to realign the party’s leadership with its grassroots base.

“I think the first order of business is that our current executives should renew their mandate,” he stated. “It doesn’t mean anybody did anything wrong or otherwise. But they should go for a fresh mandate.”

He explained that a renewed electoral process would allow party supporters to express approval or disapproval of specific individuals within the executive body.

“Sometimes, when they go to the grassroots, they might say executive A was good, so their mandate needs to be renewed, but executive B should go and sit and let a new person come and help,” he said.

Dr. Kennedy referenced recent political analysis, including exit polling by Musa Dankwa, as evidence that many Ghanaians remain dissatisfied with the NPP’s performance in the last elections, which saw the party secure one of its weakest mandates.

“To use Dr. Bawumia’s analogy — if you consider the exit polling and what Musa Dankwa said — maybe there are certain people who need to be on the hypothetical bus he talked about. So we get new drivers and new leaders,” Dr. Kennedy stated.

He concluded by calling for accountability from those who presided over the party’s electoral decline.

“We need to look at those who took us from one of Ghana’s strongest mandates to those who took us to the weakest mandate.”

NPP constitutes 9-member committee to plan delegates conference

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has constituted a nine-member planning committee to oversee preparations for the upcoming Annual National Delegates Conference, which will be held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium from July 18 to 20, 2025.

The committee, chaired by Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu, has, among other mandates, the responsibility to ensure the successful planning of the Presidential Primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections.

Other members of the Committee were Henry Nana Boakye (Vice Chair), Alhaji Haruna Mohammed (Member/Secretary), Dr Charles Dwamena (Member), Mr Divine Otoo Agorhum (Member).

The rest are Madam Abena Osei Asare, Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Hajia Safia Mohammed and Salam Mustapha as members.

This was contained in a press statement issued and signed on Wednesday by the General Secretary of the party, Mr Justin KoduaFrimpong, after a crucial decision was taken by the Party’s National Council under Article 13(1)(1) of the NPP Constitution.

The statement said the Article mandates the Council to fix a date and venue for the election of the Party’s flagbearer elections.

The statement added that the meeting of the National Council was held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, to deliberate on the Party’s rebuilding exercise, including the organisation of the upcoming Annual National Delegates Conference, where the Party is expected to consider proposed amendments to the Party Constitution.

It said the Frank Davies-led Constitution Amendments Committee submitted a compilation of the amendment proposals it received from Party Members and Identifiable Groups to the General Secretary, for onward circulation to Regional and Constituency Secretariats of the Party in line with Article 19(b) of the Constitution ahead of the Delegates Conference.

“The Committee also presented their Report to the National Council, where the Committee recommended to the National Council to fix an early date for the conduct of Presidential Primaries based on the overwhelming proposals from party members and the extensive stakeholder engagements they held.

After extensive deliberations, the National Council overwhelmingly adopted the Committee’s Report, particularly the aspect relating to the Presidential Primaries, which was strongly argued to be the best approach to urgently fill the apparent leadership vacuum in the party’s reorganisation drive,” it said.

The statement implores members, particularly delegates to the Conference, to peruse the amendment

Local poultry production too low for import ban – Agric Minister

0

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has stressed the need for Ghana to significantly boost its domestic poultry production before considering a ban on poultry imports.

Speaking at the 2025 AgriFair held at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra on Saturday, June 21, hosted by Channel One TV, the Minister noted that Ghana’s current production levels fall far short of national consumption, making an immediate ban unrealistic.

“When you look at the poultry sector, our consumption as a nation is estimated at around 400,000 metric tons, but production is only about 15,000 tons. So, how do you place a ban on the importation of poultry products?” he asked.

Mr. Opoku indicated that the government is instead prioritising strategies to increase local production. Central to this approach, he said, is the shift from rain-fed to irrigation-based agriculture, which would allow for year-round farming.

“What we plan to do is put mechanisms in place to increase production and productivity. That is why we are saying that this time round, we want to move our agriculture from its current rain-fed status to irrigation agriculture, so that we can ensure all-year-round farming,” he explained.

He further revealed that the government, under the Feed Ghana Programme, is focused on expanding irrigation infrastructure to boost both crop and livestock output across the year.

“If we get farmers under irrigation from January to December, we can ensure consistent production and also keep our agro-industries operating throughout the year,” he added.

Drop in PPI encouraging but Ghanaians are yet to feel it – Economist

0

Daniel A. Anim-Prempeh is an economist and a private legal practitioner Daniel A. Anim-Prempeh is an economist and a private legal practitioner

Economist and private legal practitioner, Daniel A. Anim-Prempeh, has revealed that despite the significant drop in the Producer Price Inflation (PPI) for May 2025, Ghanaians are yet to feel its impact.

According to him, while the drop in PPI suggests easing cost pressures on producers, the improvement must be sustained over time before it can translate into a better standard of living.

His comment follows the announcement by the Ghana Statistical Service(GSS) of a drop in the PPI from 18.5% in April to 10.25% in May 2025, the lowest rate recorded since 2023.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Anim-Prempeh explained that if the current gains are maintained, they could potentially lead to a reduction in the cost of goods and services on the market.

“With such an improved performance, why are people not feeling it in their pockets? It may lead to an improved standard of living if this performance is maintained consistently over time. What it means is that with income levels remaining the same, people will be able to acquire more goods and services because prices will fall,” he noted.

He also cautioned that, for such progress to be sustained and widely felt, structural challenges must be addressed particularly in line with the cost of power and access to affordable capital for businesses.

“We must also pay attention to key factors that may affect the PPI, such as the cost of power or utilities, and also the cost of capital. The cost of capital is very high, and manufacturers are borrowing at high rates,” he added.

Ghana’s PPI has shown a steady decline in recent months, signaling some recovery momentum amid ongoing economic reforms.

Govt to launch agribusiness export policy next month – Sampson Ahi

0

Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Sampson Ahi, has revealed that government will next month unveil a comprehensive agribusiness export policy aimed at boosting international market access for Ghanaian farmers and processors.

Speaking at Channel One TV’s AgriFair 2025 on Saturday, June 21, Sampson Ahi said the new policy will define strategic support systems and incentive structures for exporters, while also serving as a roadmap to expand agricultural production and increase value addition to local produce.

“We in the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness we have a programme in place to launch the policy with regards to the agribusiness where we will spell out benefits, advantages that exporters can take.

“I am sure we will launch it somewhere next month. When we do that we will engage the exporters so that they can take advantage of what government has for them,” Ahi stated.

The Deputy Minister highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership in driving sustainable export growth, revealing that the President is personally chairing a national committee focused on enhancing the export of locally produced goods.

He stressed the importance of value addition in making Ghanaian products competitive on the global market.

“The president is talking about sustainable exports and he is chairing a committee to make sure that we export what we produce.

“If we want to do exports then we have to add value to whatever we produce and I have seen that a lot of farmers are adding value to their produce, they are packaging very neatly so most farmers are now ready for the international market,” he stated.

Mr. Ahi added that the forthcoming agribusiness export policy will not only spell out the government’s support framework but also foster direct engagement with stakeholders to ensure inclusive and effective implementation.

AgriFair 2025, which is currently underway at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra, has attracted broad interest from farmers, agribusiness leaders, and policymakers. The event continues through Sunday, June 22, with live coverage by Channel One TV and Citi FM.

Oil Palm Research Institute cries for govt support at 2025 AgriFair

0

The Oil Palm Research Institute under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has made a passionate appeal to the government for urgent financial intervention to sustain its critical research and seedling production activities.

During an engagement with the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, at the 2025 Agrifair hosted by Channel One TV at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra on Saturday, June 21, officials from the Institute lamented the lack of funding and government support, despite their capacity to supply vital planting materials.

“We need the government to come to our aid. We need funds for our research activities. We have the planting materials, but the government is not buying,” one representative stated. “We have a lot of oil palm seedlings in our nursery, but the government is not coming on board. We are pleading with the government to please come to our aid.”

The call for support underscores a broader issue confronting Ghana’s agricultural research institutions—while they remain instrumental in developing high-yield crop varieties and improving food security, many are hampered by chronic underfunding and limited logistical support.

In response, Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku assured the Institute that the government is taking steps to address their concerns. He revealed that plans are in motion to establish a strategic platform that will facilitate collaboration between researchers and private investors.

“We are arranging a meeting with the CSIR, so take your time. We will create that platform and even bring the investors together. We want the researchers and the investors to interface for us to see what we can do, so be patient.”

Spektra Global hands over new “Insurance House” to GIA

0

By Issah Mohammed

Accra, June 21, GNA – Spektra Global, a Ghanaian architectural and building firm, has completed the construction of an office edifice for the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), which it handed over to the Association on Friday.

The building, named: “Insurance House”, located at Kanda in Accra, is a three-storey structure with a single basement that occupies approximately 1,750 square metres of land.

It features a banking hall space, conference and meeting rooms, offices, lounges, restaurant and a roof top terrace.

Dr Abiba Zakariah, the Commissioner of Insurance, said the building currently housed the GIA and the Ghana National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme.

She said the building was a symbol of unity and a deep sense of collaboration of industry players who used to work in silos.

“It was not an easy road, there were funding challenges, competing priorities, bureaucratic hurdles. And at times, downs that tested the resolve of even the most determined mind,” Dr Sakaria said.

“This building stands because of a collective perseverance and unshakable unity.”

Mr Seth Aklasi, the President of the GIA, said in an interview that the building was to improve accessibility and to enable Ghanaians to see the tangible aspect of insurance.

“Anybody who goes around and sees that we have a building here should know that if it is anything insurance, whether complain or enquires, he should be able to get it from this place,” he said.

Mr William Evans Halm, the Chief Executive Officer of Spektra Global, indicated that the project design took into consideration the environmental and traffic impact assessment, as well as health and safety management plan.

“We did a solar study of the building from 7 am to 4 pm to see how the sun impacts it and to mitigate the heat,” he added.

Mr Halm advised members of the public seeking to put up edifices, be it for residential or commercial purposes, to do so with a budget in mind.

Having a budget, he said, would help prevent projects from stalling and save cost by re-scoping project design when price of materials changed.

“The most difficult thing for anyone is to have a project in mind and in the middle, you get surprised because prices have changed,” he said.

The GIA is a trade Association for all companies registered and licensed to transact insurance business in Ghana.

It serves as the collective voice and representative body for insurance companies, reinsurers, and other entities operating in the insurance sector.

The association was registered under the Companies Code, 1963 Act 179 as amended by the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), on May 27, 1988.

It was inaugurated by the PNDC Member responsible for Finance and Economic Planning, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, on the October 7, 1988.

Government begins process of procuring birds for ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ initiative

0

By Benjamin A. Commey

Accra, June 21, GNA – The Government has started the process of procuring birds and battery cages for farmers and households to commence the poultry production initiative, otherwise known as the ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ project, Mr Eric Opoku, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, said on Saturday.

He announced plans to officially launch the initiative within the next two to three months, saying the project piloting was expected to commence in the coming weeks.

Mr Opoku disclosed this at the maiden AgriFair organised by Citi FM and Channel One Television in Accra.

The ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ project is an initiative by the Government to revitalise the country’s poultry industry and reduce reliance on imported chicken.

It aims to empower 55,000 households to produce eggs and poultry, thereby creating jobs and boosting food security.

With an estimated $300 million spent annually on importation of chicken, the programme is expected to reduce the country’s imports wage bill.

Mr Opoku said the project would soon take off, indicating that currently, the process to obtain birds, which were an essential part of the project, had commenced.

“We are in the process of procuring the birds and also the battery cages for distribution to the various farmers or households,” he said.

“But before then, while we are on the process of procuring, we are also looking at piloting something small to see what will happen when we scale it up throughout the country.”

Mr Opoku said the Government had identified about 50 commercial-scale poultry farmers with the capacity to take about 80,000 birds each, adding that with financial support, those farmers could produce four million chickens to the Ghanaian markets at a time.

That, he said, would ensure the achievement of chicken sufficiency and reduce the country’s import bill.

“That alone can push Ghana’s capacity to above 80 per cent, and that will be gradually inching to the sufficiency level,” he said.

The Minister rejected calls for the immediate restriction of import of chicken, explaining that with the current consumption rate hovering over 400,000 metric tonnes, it would be detrimental to take such a decision.

He asked: “When you look at the poultry sub-sector, for instance, our consumption as a nation is estimated at around 400,000 metric tonnes, but production is around 15,000 tonnes. So, how do you place a ban on the importation of poultry products?”

“We are now working to increase poultry production. If we are able to increase our production level to, let’s say 80 per cent, then we can place a ban to protect local producers. So, the first thing we have to do is to put in place mechanisms to increase production and productivity.”

Mr Opoku, however, expressed concern over Ghanaians taste for foreign goods as compared to locally produced ones, urging them to support the local producers by patronising made-in-Ghana products.

“When you look at the farmers’ produce, the processors have added value. But the Ghanaian consumers will go to the market and then choose the foreign product against what is produced here. If you do that, your expenditure is creating jobs elsewhere, whilst your own people are suffering,” he noted.

“So, what we must do now is to get our people to understand that every expenditure that is made on the Ghanaian-made products will go to increase job opportunities for our own people,” he urged.

The three-day fair, which commenced on Friday, brought together a mix of farmers, agribusiness professionals, students, and policymakers.

Some food items displayed are yam, plantain, cassava, fresh tomatoes, cabbage and lettuce, chicken, freshwater fish as well as processed foods like groundnut and tomato paste.

It also features an “Agric Clinic” for expert consultations, tailored agribusiness advice and technical support to enhance productivity, scale operations and adopt sustainable practices.

Joseph Boakye Danquah is a former NPP parliamentary aspirant for Subin constituency Joseph Boakye Danquah is a former NPP parliamentary aspirant for Subin constituency

The personal has become very political in Zambia.

Mourning and the build-up to a funeral is never an easy time but throw in the fallout from a long-standing feud between the country’s two top politicians – President Hakainde Hichilema and his now-late predecessor Edgar Lungu – and you have an explosive mix.

The animosity was such that Lungu’s family said one of his dying wishes was that Hichilema should not go anywhere near his body.

The row has scuppered government plans to honour the former head of state, created a distressing rift in the country and left people wondering how things got this bad.

Sunday was supposed to see the state funeral for the 68-year-old who governed for six years from 2015. But there will be no visiting dignitaries and the venue – a huge conference centre in the heart of the capital, Lusaka – will lie empty.

There was already a hint of possible trouble ahead immediately after Lungu’s death on 5 June, in the video message shared by his daughter on Facebook.

Dressed in a thick, black jacket and holding back tears, Tasila Lungu said that her father had died in a hospital in South Africa where he was being treated with “dignity and privacy”.

QNET hosts journalists from Ghana, other West African countries at Malaysian headquarters

0

QNET, a global direct selling company specialising in lifestyle and wellness products, has welcomed experienced journalists from seven West African countries to its corporate headquarters at QI Tower in Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The visit forms part of QNET’s annual media junket aimed at offering journalists and the wider public—particularly in Africa—an opportunity to gain first-hand understanding of the company’s operations, business model, and product offerings.

Journalists from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Senegal, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone arrived in Malaysia on June 19, 2025, for the engagement. As part of the programme, they also participated in the V-Convention (VCON), QNET’s flagship global event that brings together government officials, media practitioners, independent distributors, and entrepreneurs.

The journalists toured the 15-storey QI Tower, which serves as QNET’s global headquarters, before departing for Penang Island where the VCON is officially taking place. At QI Tower, they visited the QNET product gallery to physically interact with the company’s wide range of lifestyle and wellness products.

At the corporate offices, the media team also observed live operations and received presentations on QNET’s philosophy, business structure, and product development. The visit, according to organisers, was meant to underscore that QNET—now 26 years old—is a legitimate company with real products, staff, and global reach.

The journalists were introduced to the company’s philanthropic wing, the RYTHM Foundation (Raise Yourself To Help Mankind), which is focused on delivering impactful humanitarian projects worldwide.

Particular attention during the visit was drawn to QNET’s activities in Africa, where the company says its brand is often misused by fraudsters seeking to scam unsuspecting victims.

“It is clear that QNET has nothing to do with these scammers, and QNET is working to fight scams and misinformation,” organisers stated.

The visit is part of QNET’s broader effort to combat false narratives about the company in Africa and to encourage accurate public understanding through credible media engagement.

During the tour, QNET reiterated on multiple occasions that it does not offer job placements abroad, does not require exorbitant fees in exchange for employment, and does not issue scholarships or visas. The company also emphasized that it is not a Ponzi or investment scheme.

“QNET does not give scholarships or visas to anyone. QNET is not a Ponzi or investment scheme. QNET says anyone who spreads such misinformation should be reported to the security agencies or to QNET through its WhatsApp hotline: +233256630005 or email at [email protected],” participants were told.

QNET highlighted several anti-scam initiatives it is rolling out across Africa, including the “QNET Against Scams” and “Say No” campaigns. The company continues to educate the public on how to detect fraud and better understand its legitimate business model and globally certified lifestyle and wellness products.

The company further disclosed that it is actively engaging with governments and law enforcement agencies across various African countries to clarify its operations, address brand misuse, and promote collaboration to curb fraudulent activities conducted in its name.

Meanwhile, the visiting journalists expressed excitement as they prepared to witness the grand opening ceremony of V-Malaysia on Penang Island on June 21, 2025. The event will bring together thousands of QNET independent distributors for a celebration of shared success, testimonials, and renewed commitment to the direct selling model that QNET says is transforming lives across the globe.

Eric Opoku hails Channel One TV/Citi FM for championing Agriculture at AgriFair 2025

0

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has commended Channel One TV and 97.3 Citi FM for turning AgriFair 2025 into a dynamic platform for mobilising national support for agriculture and reigniting public enthusiasm for the sector.

During a visit to the fair at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra on Saturday, June 21, the Minister described agriculture as the backbone of Ghana’s economy and called for an urgent national shift toward enhancing local food production.

“Let me thank Citi FM and Channel One for providing this platform to galvanise support and generate the interest of the people of Ghana in agriculture,” Opoku said. “Agriculture is the soul of the economy. It feeds our people, creates jobs, sustains our industries, and anchors our trade. In fact, agriculture is everything.”

He expressed concern over Ghana’s continued dependence on imported food despite the country’s abundant natural resources, calling the situation a paradox that demands immediate action.

“Our food import bill is estimated at over $2 billion annually. Yet we have the land, water, cheap labour, and proximity to market. Nature has blessed us,” he stated. “With AfCFTA now in motion, we have what it takes to use agriculture as a driver of economic growth.”

Opoku also underscored the link between food security and national sovereignty.

“A hungry man is not a free man. To truly free our people, we must feed them. That means producing food in abundance—not just to feed ourselves but to trade with the rest of Africa and the world.”

IGP has impounded over 1,200 excavators as gov’t steps up galamsey fight – Shamima Muslim

0

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has revealed that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has impounded a total of 1,250 excavators at various ports across the country.

She said this forms part of efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey in the country.

“I want to assure Ghanaians that the government, through the IGP (Christian Tetteh Yohuno), who is really now the lead in terms of fighting the galamsey, has impounded 1,250 excavators at our ports,” she disclosed this during her appearance on JoyNews’s Newsfile programme on Saturday, 21st June.

According to Ms Muslim, the police, in collaboration with relevant authorities, are currently investigating the reasons behind the importation of such a large number of heavy-duty machines, adding that the government is also working closely with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to track all excavators currently in use across the country.

“We are working with DVLA to track all these excavators because obviously there are supply and demand issues, so we are trying to deal with those blockages,” adding that “What are these excavators coming to do? And if you have no proof that you are bringing in these excavators for construction works, you don’t dare to clear these excavators.”

Ms Muslim emphasised that these interventions form part of the broader strategy by the current NDC administration to curb the menace of illegal mining, which continues to damage Ghana’s environment and threaten its economic integrity.

The tracking and regulation of excavators, she said, are critical to ending the indiscriminate degradation of land and water bodies.

The spokesperson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring environmental order and holding accountable those who fuel the galamsey economy.

The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West and Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Gizella Tetteh, on Saturday, June 21, made her debut appearance at the 2025 edition of the Ecobank-JoyNews Habitat Fair Clinic at the Achimota Retail Centre in Accra.

Accompanied by her family, Madam Tetteh toured the fairgrounds, engaging with exhibitors and exploring a wide range of building, housing, and construction products on display.

The MP expressed her admiration for the initiative and praised JoyNews and its partners for creating such an informative and impactful platform for homeowners and prospective property developers.

“I’m truly impressed with the quality of products on display and the level of organisation. It’s a great initiative that brings both consumers and suppliers together to promote quality housing solutions,” she remarked.

The 2025 Habitat Fair, which is themed “Home Ownership: Exploring Solutions for All,” has drawn participation from some of Ghana’s leading home and construction brands. Exhibitors are not only showcasing innovative solutions but also engaging directly with homeowners, offering insights and deals tailored to their needs.

Visitors have also noted that one of the standout features of the Achimota edition is how “dust-free” and convenient the event has been. The Achimota Retail Centre’s tiled flooring, combined with its open yet sheltered environment, provides a clean and comfortable space for interaction. Attendees have praised the setting, saying it offers a refreshing break from the usual challenges of outdoor expos.

The Ecobank-JoyNews Habitat Fair continues through the weekend, offering patrons more opportunities to connect with housing experts, discover property deals, and explore affordable home improvement solutions.

TESCON slams Nhyiaeso MP for saying Christians will not elect a Muslim President

Members of TESCON have condemned comments made by the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah, in which he claimed that Christians can never vote for a Muslim to become President of Ghana.

At a press conference held on Saturday, June 21, TESCON members from the SD Dombo University (SDDU expressed displeasure with the MP’s remarks, describing then as divisive and unbefitting of a senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The group cited the results of the recent NPP presidential primaries, where Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a Muslim, emerged victorious even in Dr Amoah’s own constituency.

“Let’s go to his constituency in this, in the just- ended elections. The person who said Christians will not elect a Muslim got 35,502 votes. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who he said is a Muslim and for that matter Christians will not vote for him, beat him in his constituency by 35,648.

“Basically all what he said at Kumasi Technical University is shallow, is something that we the intellectual wing of the party we cannot go by and for that matter, in all humility and modesty, we call on him to come out and apologise to the good people of Ghana”, the spokesperson said.

He recounted that on June 20, during a capacity-building event organised by the Kumasi Technical University TESCON chapter, Dr Amoah made statements that, in their view, promoted religious bigotry.

“We believe those statements were highly divisive. He said, and I quote ‘Muslims are not from God,’ and further claimed that Christians will not elect a Muslim leader. As the intellectual wing of the party, we want to go on record to say we do not believe in division, and we strongly reject any comment that promotes religious discrimination in this country”, the spokesperson added.

The group emphasised that the platform at Kumasi Technical University was meant to be one that inspired young people, not one used to sow division.

“In all humility and modesty, we call on Dr Stephen Amoah to retract his comments and issue an unqualified apology to the good people of Ghana and to TESCON. That event was meant to uplift students, many of whom are struggling with personal and academic challenges. Instead, he chose to divide us”, he noted.

During his engagement with the student wing of the party in Kumasi, Dr Amoah reportedly told the audience that Christians in Ghana would not vote for a Muslim to become President.

TESCON has made it clear that such views do not represent the collective spirit of inclusiveness within the NPP or the values of Ghana’s democracy.

How Egypt is using sports to boost its global image and economy

Egypt is turning to sports as a key tool to improve its international image, strengthen diplomatic ties, and support long-term development goals.

This strategy is part of a growing global trend where countries use cultural influence, not force, to achieve foreign policy aims.

Through sports diplomacy, Egypt is promoting national pride, attracting tourists, and creating opportunities for economic growth. At the heart of this plan is the global success of its athletes and it’s a Mohamed Salah, Egypt’s top football star, plays a major role in this effort.

His success in the English Premier League has brought international attention to Egypt.

His image is widely used in local campaigns to promote tourism, investment, and national values. His reputation for discipline, humility, and charity has helped shape a positive view of Egypt abroad.

Beyond football, Egypt is gaining global recognition in squash. Players like world number one Ali Farag continue to dominate, and international squash events hosted in Egypt, including those near the Pyramids of Giza, attract global fans and media attention.

Egypt also focuses on hosting events to boost its soft power. The country held the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2024 African Handball Championship. Plans are in place to host the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and the Men’s U-19 Handball World Championship.

These efforts align with Egypt’s Vision 2030, which sees sports as a driver of economic and social progress. The government is using targeted media campaigns, youth programs, and partnerships with sports bodies to support this plan.

Still, challenges remain. Limited resources and political issues affect how far Egypt can go.

Experts suggest building stronger infrastructure, increasing private investment, and linking sports with other sectors like technology and health to boost results.

Despite these challenges, Egypt’s sports diplomacy is growing. By promoting its athletes and organizing major competitions, the country is increasing its visibility on the global stage and driving economic and cultural benefits at home.

Ghana has enough fuel to last over 2 months – NPA Boss

0

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Tamakloe, has assured Ghanaians that the country has enough fuel reserves to last more than two months, despite concerns over potential global supply disruptions triggered by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, Mr. Tamakloe disclosed that Ghana currently holds over 200 million litres of petrol and more than 150 million litres of diesel, quantities he described as sufficient to stabilize the market in the medium term.

“I can assure the good people of Ghana that currently, as we speak, we have enough stock or reserve to last us beyond two months,” he said.

“With all efforts, we are confident that we wouldn’t have any problem with supply disruptions at all.”

His comments come as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East raise fears of shipping disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global oil shipments.

On the suspension of the implementation of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, which imposes a GHS1 per litre levy on petrol and diesel, Mr. Tamakloe stated that government is monitoring global developments and will decide on the rollout date in consultation with stakeholders.

“The government is always monitoring global events and will respond in the next foreseeable days. It doesn’t look like there has been any serious disruption… but there will be enough consultation with the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, among others, before the rollout will come,” he explained.

The new levy, originally scheduled to take effect on June 16, was suspended earlier this week pending further review, as announced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

0

Former Bahamian professional tennis player Roger Smith has expressed his commitment to supporting the growth of tennis in Ghana, describing the opportunity to give back as “a blessing.”

Speaking at the opening session of the A10 Africa Tennis clinic in Accra, Smith said, “Building has always been a blessing. Like Katrina said, through the sport of tennis, it’s always been something that just wakes you up. And you know when you do something right, because you’re going to get the best out of it.”

Smith, who is part of a delegation leading a two-day clinic for coaches and young players, emphasized the importance of giving back and building lasting relationships.

“Giving back to Ghana, helping and assisting the federation and the coaches, and hopefully a long-term relationship is a great thing,” he said.

“Hopefully we can leave these coaches and the federation with some great experience in their lives. It’s whatever the goal is—opportunities for these kids—and that’s great to assist in that.”

He also expressed appreciation for the chance to be involved and promised continued support in the future. “We can always work together. And I know Katrina and myself will always, always be available,” Smith said.

“So whenever you want any kind of help, we will gladly jump on that flight deck. Please don’t hesitate to invite us back.”

Roger Smith represented The Bahamas at the 1992 Olympic Games and reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 96 in 1988, establishing himself as one of the Caribbean’s top tennis players of his era

While all eyes shift to Nico Williams and where he might land next season, his older brother Inaki Williams is staying put and making his stance crystal clear: he is loyal to Athletic Club.

Next season, Inaki is set to wear the captain’s armband for the first time, a fitting honour for a player who’s never hidden his devotion to the club.

Amid speculation about Nico’s possible move to FC Barcelona, Inaki took to his official platforms on Friday to show where his heart lies.

The Ghana international shared a post on his Instagram Story featuring a fan proudly wearing his red-and-white jersey, with the Athletic anthem playing in the background. It was a simple but powerful gesture that reaffirmed his bond with the Bilbao side.

“It’s impossible to want him more,” Inaki said of Nico while reminding critics that his younger brother’s decision is his alone.

Still, some have blamed him or their family. But with his message, Inaki silenced doubts and stood firm for his club.
