The Ghana Federation of Labour says it will not be part of a planned demonstration by Organized Labour in protest of the worsening economic condition in the country.

General Secretary of the Federation, Abraham Koomson who announced this on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, said the move is ‘populist and politically motivated’.

Organized Labour after a press conference in Accra asked all workers to boycott work on Thursday 24 July, to demand better living condition from government.

General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) who addressed the press conference ordered all ‘all workers including those of you in the media, formal and informal to stay away from work and converge at designated locations in Accra and other regional capitals to demonstrate.’

But Abraham Koomson stated unequivocally that the one-day national protest declared by the leadership of Organized Labour is an ‘irresponsible decision’.

According to him, ‘the strategy is wrong and I can tell you they will not achieve any results because Organized Labour is disorganized’.

In his opinion, the way forward is for Organized Labour to dialogue with government on the way forward rather than ‘asking workers to go on the street’.

Abraham Koomson maintained that the strike will rather create more problems in the labour front than bring solutions.

‘This does not make sense; we are just making a mockery of ourselves and Federation of Labour will not be part of it’ he stressed.

Meanwhile, the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has expressed its readiness to join the demonstration next Thursday.

General Secretary of ICU, Solomon Kotei bemoaned what he says is the deteriorating condition of workers in the country due to current state of the economy.

He indicated that as a result of tax hikes, local industries are virtually grinding to a halt and leading to retrenchment of workers.

Mr Kotey said the demonstration declared by Organized Labour is a step in the right direction. Story by Ghana/Adomonline.com/Adwoa Gyasiwaa
