The duo of Umeh Amadi and Nimota Aregbesola created an exciting end to the 2014 Toyin Okenla-Ojeaga U-17 National Table Tennis Championships on Saturday as they won the single events in the boys and girls’ categories respectively.
Amadi, a JSS 2 pupil of CAC Secondary School in Akure, Ondo State, defeated his teammate from the state, Sunday Akomolafe, in a seven set thriller 9/11, 8/11, 12/10, 14/12, 9/11, 11/13, 4/11 to claim gold in the boys’ category.
Aregbesola of Lagos Team 2 also came from a set down to beat Zainab Surmer of the National Team 11/9, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11 as she emerged winner in the girls’ category.
Lagos won four gold, three silver and four bronze medals to beat Ondo to the title.
Ondo won two gold and two silver medals, while Kwara settled for third place with one gold and one silver medal.
Ekiti State had three bronze medals, while the National Team finished with one silver and two bronze medals.
The winners in the team events went home with N50,000, second-placed teams got N20,000 each, while the third-placed teams got N15,000.
Sponsor of the championships, ex-international Toyin Okenla-Ojeaga said the one-week event had brought to the fore new players capable of representing Nigeria at the international level in the future.
“I’m happy the tournament has exposed these players at this level; we can now plan for future games with these athletes. I was particularly impressed with the boys’ singles game, it was worthy of being the final,” Okenla-Ojeaga said.
She, however, advised the players to engage in regular practice in order to get better in the game.
Twelve teams made up of 11 states and the National Team featured in the tournament.
