Sultanate Council refutes Senator’s claim
The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has refuted a claim attributed to Sen. Ahmed Maccido (PDP-Sokoto), to the effect that he is representing the Caliphate in the Senate.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Senator, who represents Sokoto Central Senatorial District, made the claim in a recent interview carried in one of the national dailies on March 20.The rebuttal is contained in a statement signed by Alhaji Attahiru Hussaini, the Secretary of the council, and made available to newsmen in Sokoto on Saturday.
The statement reads, “the attention of the Sultanate council of Sokoto has been drawn to a recent publication credited to the Distinguished Senator Ahmed Maccido, representing Sokoto Central Senatorial District.
“In the said publication, Senator Ahmed Maccido claimed to be the representative of the Sokoto Caliphate.
“The Sultanate council wishes to categorically disassociate itself from all comments and assumptions made by the Distinguished Senator.”
Sen. Maccido remained the only Senator from Sokoto State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).The other two Senators, Dr Ibrahim Gobir and Alhaji Dahiru Tambuwal had recently defected to the APC together with Gov. Aliyu Wamakko and his supporters.
Sen. Ahmed Maccido had, however, stayed put in the PDP, maintaining that it was the only national party and would not betray his constituents.
