Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole has started training ahead of the second edition of the Okpekpe international 10km road race slated for May 3. Oshiomhole featured in the maiden edition last year.
The governor who resumed training around the hilly Iyamoh/Ayua community is being trained by an ex-international athlete, Yusuf Ali, who is also serving as the technical director of the Okpekpe Road Race.
The governor was put through a 3km road walk in the first instance and he has since resumed training since the weekend after he returned from a trip outside the state.
A friend of the former labour union leader said that the governor had started a full 10km training and ready to pick one of the star prizes this year.
“Last year Oshiomhole finished at 131st position. This year he is well prepared and ready to be among the first ten finishers,” Ali said.
Over six communities including Auchi are eagerly waiting for the second edition of the race which they said is bringing life and economic activities to their communities.
Usman Lawal, a food vendor in the area, said last year’s edition turned his life around and so can hardly wait for the event day.
“Oga, last year, I made a lot of money. Now, I am able to expand my business. May God bless the initiators of the programme,” he said.
