Impressive Obasi Help Schalke Provisionally Climb 2nd in the Bundesliga

Chinedu Obasi opened scoring for Schalke and provided the other in their 2-0 home win over Hertha Berlin on Friday.

The former Hoffenheim striker broke the deadlock on 16 minutes, after a superb solo effort, chesting the ball past a defender and then pushed it away from another before rounding the keeper to score.

The Super Eagles winger then assisted Klaas Jan Huntelaar for Schalke’s second, seconds after the restart. It was the Dutchman’s 11th goal from 13 games this season.

Sebastian Langkamp thought he’d pulled one back with a header from a corner in the 81st, but the effort was ruled out for a foul, though TV replays failed to identify any infringement.

The win helped Schalke move up to second in the Bundesliga table, though Dortmund could reclaim the position with a win over Stuttgart on Saturday.

The Nigeria international’s performance in the game earned him plaudit from teammate and Schalke midfielder Max Meyer after the match.

“That (Obasi goal) opened the door for us and we won the game convincingly,” said Meyer.

Bayern Munich clinched the Bundesliga title in record time on Tuesday, following their 3-1 win over Berlin at the Olympic Stadium.
