Maiduguri - The Borno Police Command on Friday confirmed the killing of an unnamed cobbler by unknown gunmen in old Maiduguri on Thursday.
Mr Samuel Tizhe, the Public Relations’ Officer of the command, told newsmen in Maiduguri that the cobbler was shot dead while repairing some shoes.
It was gathered from some witnesses that the cobbler was shot by two gunmen, who had trailed him for some time.
The witnesses, who claimed anonymity, said, “the two teenagers trailed the cobbler for some time as he moved round to scout for customers.
Malam Bulama Shettima, a resident, said, “We believed that they shot him because they were suspecting he might be a police CID or an undercover agent.”
Shettima said that the attackers fired several shots at the deceased at close range before fleeing in different directions.
In a related development, an Islamic Cleric, Malam Mohammed Bukar, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in similar fashion.
A witness, Malam Garba Ino, said that, Bukar, a lecturer at the Mohammed Goni College of Islamic Studies, Maiduguri, was killed at his residence at Adam Kolo ward, Maiduguri.
The police spokesman, however, declined comment on the issue, and said that he was yet to be briefed.
Meanwhile, members of the Joint Task Force (JTF) on Operation Restore Order (ORO) detonated an Improvise Explosive Devise (IED), which was dumped near the Gwange Primary School, Maiduguri.
The JTF spokesman, Lt. Col. Hassan Ifijeh, told newsmen that the IED was detonated after the JTF was alerted by some persons in the area. (NAN)
