Tunisia: Ceremony in Honour of Local Medallists At 2012 London Paralympics

Tunis — Interim Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, Friday, chaired, in Carthage, a ceremony in honour of Tunisian athletes who had distinguished themselves at the 2012 London Paralympics.

Mr. Jebali thanked the Tunisian athletes for their great commitment and courage, praising the performances made during this event, which are, he said, “a reason of pride for Tunisia.”

“We appreciate the great efforts made by these athletes to hoist the national colours and they deserve to be encouraged materially and morally,” he underlined.

“The best reward we can give to them is permanent jobs that ensure decent life to them,” stressed the PM who announced, in agreement with the Ministry in charge, the allocation of the posts of sports instructor to athletes of the Tunisian team who had taken part in the Paralympics.

He said this decision is part of a set of measures taken for these athletes, involving particularly the social, medical and sports components, like the creation of specialised federations of disability sports.

In a statement to TAP, President of the Tunisian Federation of Disability Sport Ali Harzallah welcomed the decision to hire these athletes as sports’ instructors which will certainly ensure a decent life to them and give them more confidence in their abilities and in the future,” he said.

“I am deeply moved by this gesture which will put us on a par with able-bodied athletes,” said athlete Mohamed Farhat Chida, gold medallist at 400m.

During this ceremony, which was attended by several ministers and presidents of Tunisian sports federations, bonuses were presented to all athletes who took part in the 2012 London Games.

The Tunisian disability sports team had finished 14th at the table medal of the 2012 London Paralympics. They came first in Africa and in the Arab world and second in the Mediterranean with a total of 9 gold medals, 5 silver and 5 bronze.
