Johannesburg – A tip-off led to the arrest of four robbers near Kwanobuhle in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

Lieutenant Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the men were cornered by a police team on Friday night shortly after they robbed a Chinese shop in the Kamesh area.

The men were reportedly travelling in a BMW vehicle, on their way to rob another foreign-owned shop.

“When [they] spotted police approaching from both sides, a high speed chase ensued… The suspects were forced into a dead end alley where they crashed through a locked gate,” said Naidu.

One of the men started shooting at police as they attempted to flee the scene.

“They scattered in different directions [but] police surrounded them from all sides and arrested them,” Naidu said.

A 9mm pistol, a grey BMW, cartons of cigarettes and cash were confiscated.

The group was expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
