SEEKING to promote tourism through sports, the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has injected 10m/- towards supporting this year’s Rock City Marathon dubbed ‘promoting domestic tourism through sports’ to be held in Mwanza on October 28.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday during a brief handover ceremony, NSSF’s Acting Principal Public Relations and Customer Service, Theopista Mheta, said that the support has been geared towards promoting the local athletes new talents but at the same promoting tourist attraction areas to the neighbouring countries.
“We greatly recognize the importance of sports in promoting our domestic tourism but at the same time this opportunity can also be used in developing new talents in athletics, that’s why we have proudly decided to support this year’s Rock City Marathon.
“We believe that our support can go a long way in contributing the development of athletics among other sports in the country as sports now is becoming a number one source of employment in the world,” Theopista said.While receiving the cheque and 100 T-shirts, Capital Plus International (CPI) Events Manager and Coordinator of this year’s Rock City Marathon, Grace Sanga applauded NSSF for their support to Rock City Marathon and urged other companies and organizations to step forward and support the event.
“We thank NSSF for their support as the support will enable us improves our preparations for this year’s Rock City Marathon,” Grace said.She mentioned that apart from National Social Security Fund (NSSF) other sponsors are Airtel Tanzania, Parastatal Pension Fund (PPF), Geita Gold Mine, African Barrick Gold, Air Tanzania Company Ltd (ATCL), Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) Nyanza Bottles Ltd, New Africa Hotel and New Mwanza Hotel.
However, Sanga called on athletes to start registering for the marathon and mentioned stations were forms are found to be; Nyamagana Stadium offices, Capital Plus International’s office at ATC House 3rd Floor Ohio Street, TTB offices at IPS building 3rd floor in Dar es Salaam and also easily downloaded at www.rockcitymarathon.blogspot.com.
CPI announced earlier that this year’s 21 kilometre winner for both men and women athletes will walk away with 1.2 million Tanzania shillings while the 1st runner up will receive 900,000/- and 2nd runner up will also walk away with 700,000/- in both categories (men and women). The race will be held on at CCM Kirumba Stadium.
