Luanda — The Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) held in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, has decided to continue assisting the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC) with the political crisis prevailing in that country.

The information was released to the press at Luanda’s “4 de Fevereiro” International Airport by Angolan Foreign minister, George Chicoty, while assessing the results from the Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government.

The minister said the Summit condemned the attack of the M23, considering it a negative force that has to be combated.

George Chikoty also said the meeting recommended the presence of the United Nations in the DRC, in line with its article 7.

According to him, the Summit has also recommended the UN member countries to participate in the effort of pacification of that region of the African continent.

The official also said the Summit welcomed decisions from the International Conference on the Great Lakes that accepts the participation of SADC in the international force.

He said the Republic of Tanzania will immediately release the first group and appoint the commander of the SADC troops.

SADC will also arrange with the UN secretary general and with the African Union on the issue, the source added.

According to the Angolan Foreign minister who was quoting decisions from the Summit, SADC strongly rejects the violations against the DRC.

As to the situation in Zimbabwe, he said the Summit admitted there has been some progress between the Government and the opposition political parties in the process of constitutional review, including a referendum ahead of the elections in 2013.

Regarding the Republic of Madagascar, the source said, the SADC member countries also recognised the effort being made by the heads of State and Government of the regional organisation.
