NDC Diverts Students Laptops

LAPTOPS MEANT for distribution to polytechnic students are being doled out to only members of the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN), the student wing of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The program is being carried out by the Ministry of Science and Environment to boost science and technological development through the practical study of ICT.

DAILY GUIDE has learnt that beneficiaries of the program who are non-TEIN members have been sidelined as the laptops are first given to presidents of TEIN for onward distribution to the students.

According to our information, the ministry has mandated them to give the device to only members of TEIN.

In view of this, TEIN presidents at the various polytechnic campuses compiled the list of all their members after receiving the laptops and distributed it to them.

Information available to the paper has it that only members of the ruling party’s youth wing at Kumasi Polytechnic for instance received laptops supplied by their president, Jeremiah Peter Nkrumah Nimako.

The move allegedly caused an uproar on campus as the other students led by members of the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Tertiary Education Students Confederacy Network (TESCON)  raised eyebrows.

At a hurriedly organized press conference to refute the allegation, Mr. Nimako said the accusation was not only false but an act of political immaturity by TESCON.

“TESCON’s claims about the unfair distribution of laptops by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology to TEIN members are untrue,” he said during Tuesday’s  press conference.

He said the allegation being championed by TESCON had received the support of some students and urged them to discount it.

He said TEIN members went through due process to get their   laptops and that there was no under hand dealings in the process. He however fell short of disclosing what exactly he meant by “due process.”
