INEC wants Special Electoral Commission to try electoral offenders

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday called for the establishment of a Special Electoral Commission with special jurisdiction to try electoral offenders.

Mr Mike Igini, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Cross River, made the call while parading three Ad hoc staff, who allegedly falsified election results in the Feb 25, governorship election in the state.

Igini accused the judiciary of frustrating efforts of the commission in prosecuting electoral offenders. According to him, the problem of the commission was not that it did not have sufficient political will to handle problems but because, the judiciary had not lived up to expectation.

He said that the judiciary delayed cases that were brought before the court and most times used technicalities to strike out cases.

Igini said the three persons were arrested over alleged falsification of election results in Etung Local Government Area of Cross River.

The suspects were two presiding officers and an assistant presiding officer and have been handed over to the security operatives for investigation.

“It is unfortunate that after one year, the matter is still pending in court. INEC cannot appoint a judge, why won’t they assign a judge?,’’ he asked.

The REC said that some of those arrested after the February election falsified the election result and compromised by collecting money.

“The money they collected makes the result not to reflect the level of participation of voters in Ajaso Ward 4 in Etung Local Government Area of the state,’’ Igini said.

Igini, however, said that the result of the election in the units were cancelled and promised that those who perpetrated the alleged electoral fraud must face the full weight of the law.

He said that the suspects would be arraigned in court soonest. (NAN)
