Dede Denies Skipper Ambitions

In sharp contrast to speculations that Marseille winger Dede Ayew is desperately eying the Black Stars captain’s armband, the midfielder says it has never crossed his mind.

Dede and his junior sibling Jordan Ayew, speaking on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday night from France, revealed, “I have realized in life that there are times and seasons for everything, and things happen in God’s own time.

“I didn’t lobby for the captain’s role in the U-20 team, the coach just called me and handed me the band.

“For now, John Mensah is our captain, he has been around for sometime and is doing well. We all respect him. I believe football is about what you do on the pitch when you are given the chance.

“I joined the Stars in 2007 but I have not fought for the captain’s arm band as perceived by many. God has a way of doing things,” Dede added.

In his response to how he considers the availability of the number 10 shirt for his use, he said, “It has been my favorite shirt since childhood. That is what I have worn all this while. It is a special shirt because it is worn by great players.”

The 2009 U-20 world cup winner said he will not turn his back on Marseille now that the financial crunch is staring the former European champions in the face.

In a related development, Jordan has stated that he is targeting to win a starting role with the French side.

He admitted that English Premier side Reading expressed interest in his services but Marseille and the English side did not come to any agreement.

He is hoping to get a starting role when the Stars host Malawi this Saturday in the Nations Cup qualifier in Accra, and promised to hit the back of the net should the opportunity present itself.

The Ayew brothers have since joined their colleagues in camp at the Alisa Hotel.
