Community Games end in style

AFTER two weeks of scintillating sports competition that offered so much excitement and fun, the maiden edition of Olympic Community Games, sponsored by Nutricima Limited, finally ended on Sunday with champions emerging in three sports categories after the final matches at the new Agege Township Stadium.

Ten Lagos communities participated in the 14-day Games that featured such football, table tennis and draught. The communities included Agege, Bariga, Ketu, Obalende, Surulere, Mushin, Ajegunle, Oshodi, Ikorodu and Orile-Iganmu.

In the football final, Ajegunle defeated Agege 3-2 to emerge champion. Agege had drawn the first blood in the fifth minute after some neat exchange of passes, but a howler from the Agege goalkeeper gifted Ajegunle a chance to draw level.

Agege shot into the lead in the second half but again surrendered it with 15 minutes from regulation time. It was then made to pay for its blushes when Ajegunle snatched a late winner in the last seven minutes.

Expectedly, both teams gave good account of themselves as the match wore on with composed play and team understanding, which often drew applause from the fans that thronged the stadium.

In the third place match played earlier, Bariga beat Kosofe 2-1 despite finishing the match with 10 men after one of its players received the matching order following two bookable offences in the first half.

Ikorodu etched its name on the records book by winning the table tennis male and female categories. The male team defeated its Agege counterpart while the female team ran away victorious over Surulere. Oshodi/Isolo also won the first prize in draught.
