Andre has been nominated for 2012 African Footballer of the Year

Ghana’s Andre Ayew has made the five-man shortlist for the 2012 Glo-CAF Footballer of the Year Award as Zambia captain Chris Katongo is snubbed for the prestigious accolade.

Ayew, 22, was named alongside Cameroonian Alexandre Song, Demba Ba from Senegal and the Ivorian duo of Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure in a brief ceremony in Accra.

The Olympique Marseille player earns his second straight nomination following his consistent displays for both club and country.

The son of Ghana legend Abedi Pele came third in last year’s award after coming behind Mali’s Seydou Keita and the eventual winner Yaya Toure.

Katongo on the other hand who led The Chipolopolo to win the 2012 Nations Cup shockingly failed to make the cut.

The Henan Construction playmaker emerged the best player in Zambia’s success in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

His personal feat in 2012 was however not enough to garner enough votes from the coaches of the various member associations of CAF.

This will certainly be s lap on the face of especially Zambians as their captained who reigned supreme amongst other world class players at the last AFCON is deemed just not good enough to be part of the first five top players from Africa.

The grand event which will come off on December 20 at the State banquet Hall in Accra will also see CAF award the best player plying his trade on the continent.

Here, Egypt and Al Ahly talisman Mohammed Aboutreka will compete against the TP Mazembe duo of Rainford Kalaba and Stoppilla Sunzu.
