8,000 security personnel mobilized for Sokoto election

Sokoto – More than 8000 security personnel have being mobilised for Saturday’s governorship election in Sokoto State, says the state commissioner of police (CP), Alhaji Adisa Bolanta.

Bolanta in Sokoto on Friday said that some of the officers and men were drafted from neighbouring states.

“The Agencies involved are the police, the Army, SSS, immigration, civil defence, NDLEA and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

“We are getting men from Kebbi and Zamfara states– for the conventional police– and then anti-riot policemen from 11 states,” he said.

Bolanta, who is also the chairman of the state inter-agencies security committee, urged eligible voters to come out in large numbers and exercise their civic right, without any fear of molestation.

On Boko Haram’s threat to bomb Sokoto, the CP said the concerted effort of all security agencies and vigilance on the part of the residents, would continue to thwart such evil plans.

He described security as a collective responsibility, and pleaded with residents of the state to always inform security agencies of strange movement and unknown faces around them for prompt action.

In the same vein, the Sokoto State commandant of the Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps (NCDSC), Alhaji Aminu Soro, said that the joint effort of security agencies in the state had paid off.

He said that 1700 NCDSC officials—both in uniform and mufti—were in the combined security team for the election.

Soro said that the inter-agencies security committee, being co-ordinated by the CP, has been proactive and has continued to share information towards fighting crime.

On the Boko Haram menace, the commandant believed the concerted effort of the security agencies and prayers by the faithful in Churches and Mosques, would continue to keep Sokoto free of the activities of the sect. (NAN)
