As part of efforts to manage waste disposal in the country, a waste disposal facility dubbed, ‘Nsumia Waste Disposal facility,’ has finally begun its operations in Accra.

Located within the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality, off the Accra -Nsawam motorway, the facility is to serve as an alternative sold waste landfill site for the Accra Metropolis and its surrounding areas.

It is also to reduce the pressure that had mounted on existing landfill sites in the country, making it difficult to dump waste any time the sites were full to capacity.

Currently, the Kpone landfill site is the only site receiving garbage from Accra, which amounts to 2, 500 tons a day.

As a result of garbage mass, the offensive odour emanating from the dump site has become unbearable.

Alternative site
Speaking in an interview in Accra, the General Manager of Waste Landfills Company Limited, operators of the site, Mr. Peter Kwei Dagadu said, the strategic location of the facility would cater for the refuse collected in the Western part of Accra and nearby Municipalities.

That, he said, was to reduce the pressure on the Kpone Landfill site saying, ‘At the moment all refuse trucks go to Kpone and this is putting a lot of pressure on the site so this new one would ease the pressure and also serve as an alternative site for dumping refuse.’

He said the site which had a size volume of about 680,000 cubic metres could receive a minimum of 80 refuse trucks per day.

EPA certified

He said that the site had been licensed by the Environmental protection Agency to operate as a Solid Waste Disposal site and was opened to all waste contractors for dumping.

Mr Dagadu said the facility was able to handle up to 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily and that will substantially relieve the pressure on waste contractors that travel all the way to Kpone to dump.

He, however, advised the general public to be responsible and subscribe to waste collection services to guarantee that their waste ends up at the right location for efficient waste disposal.

‘At the moment all refuse trucks go to Kpone and this is putting a lot of pressure on the site so this new one would ease the pressure and also serve as an alternative site for dumping refuse.’
