Anti-narcotics agencies seized over 5000 kilogrammes of illicit drugs last year—a haulage tonnes larger than the entire 3807 kilos of narcotics confiscated in 2011.
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency also arrested a total 254 suspects for drug trafficking in moves to clampdown on supply, said the agency’s Obiefule Chidi, deputy commander of narcotics.
He said the agency secured convictions in 88 prosecutions, compared with only 77 convictions in 2011. Fifty-eight more cases are pending before courts in the FCT.
The agency announced this week it also seized seven vehicles “used in transporting illicit drugs into the FCT,” according to Chidi.
At least 5,078 kilos of the entire haulage was cannabis, accounting for more than 90% of the total. Cocaine made up only 1.2 kilos and heroine was just over 10gm, according to a breakdown of the haulage by NDLEA.
The agency also seized over N580,000 in monetary exhibit, along with $1,100 and £100.
Last year, NDLEA “treated and discharged a total of 70 drug dependent persons” in efforts to reduce drug demand, said Chidi. Sixteen more addicts are still undergoing treatment.
