The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is to collaborate with the Office of Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to conduct a survey.
This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by Dr Yemi Kale, the Statistician-General of the Federation. It stated that the survey is to ascertain the estimate of MDGs indicators in 2012. The goals, the statement added, were to eradicate extreme hunger and poverty, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women and reduce child mortality. Others were to improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development.
The Survey would provide the MDGs indicators for 2012 and give an insight on the extent of achievement based on the indicators. It would also help in estimating MDGs trend if the data on the indicators were annualised. It stressed the need to collect data needed for the estimation of the indicators from time to time in order to ascertain the level of achievement of MDGs in Nigeria. “The survey will be conducted in both urban and rural areas in all the 36 states of the federation and the FCT. “The general areas where data are to be collected include; household, individual women between 15 and 49 years and children under five years of age. “Our field officers will be visiting the selected households from Monday, Jan. 7 to Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 to collect the required data,’’ it said. It stated that the NBS and MDGs office, solicited cooperation of states, local governments, communities and households, particularly in completing the questionnaires correctly, in order for the exercise to be successful. “We would want to reiterate that national development is a collective responsibility, with accurate, timely and reliable data as a major pre-requisite for strategic planning and development,’’ the statement stated. The statement recalled that the United Nations in its general Assembly in 2000 in New York, agreed to eradicate poverty, under the aegis of MDGs.
