MTN To Upgrade Facilities With Over Ghc300m In 2014

In the quest to provide quality and reliable services to its customers, MTN Ghana has penciled down GHc 311million to upgrade its facilities in the year 2014.

According to Mr. Serame Taukobang, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, MTN has 45.63% of the market leadership as well as 54.21% of data leadership among telecommunication companies in the country and was therefore necessary to add 120 new 3G sites to the 173 sites it developed in 2013, in order to meet customer demands.

He reveled that a 400 KM extensive national fibre and microwave network has been installed in the country to help increase access to network capacity and also increase subscriber base of MTN.

The CEO of MTN made this known during at this year’s MTN Editor’s Forum, which was held in Accra.

Touching on the effects of the erratic power supply on the telecommunications industry, using MTN as a reference point, Mr. Taukobang disclosed that not only does MTN have to grapple with the high cost of providing alternative sources of power but it is facing serious issues with generator and battery theft from cell sites.

This, in his view, is contributory to bad signal customers experience once in a while but on the question as to whether the investment in Ghana has been a profitable one, the CEO of MTN stated that “Ghana has been very positive and interesting for the MTN team”.
