Close to 300 staff and customers of MTN hit the streets of Accra yesterday for a brisk health walk on the theme, ‘Sustaining the business through employee wellness’.

The participants, amidst Police and Army escort, began the exercise from the company’s Ridge Towers head office through the Ridge Roundabout, Osu Oxford Street and returned to the starting point, amid brass band music.

And as has been the norm, the participants crowned the activity with about 30 minutes’ aerobics.

After the walk, Head of Human Resource Amma Benneh Amponsah said, ‘We roll out a series of programs on May Days, but this year’s exercise focused on staff and customers’ wellness. People are health conscious lately so we decided to embark on a walk to drum home the importance of healthy lifestyle.’

She indicated that the initiative, which ran concurrently in all the company’s business districts, would be an annual exercise as part of efforts to share with their customers the benefits of exercising.

MTN Workers Union chairman Dominic Kouto described the event as a huge success and promised to change it from an annual affair to a monthly one.

Later, officials of the National Labour Commission joined the MTN workers and in her address, Alberta Yirenkyi, Senior Manager of Employee and Industrial Relations said, ‘Our focus on health and wellness among our workforce is of great significance to us because a healthy mind lives in a healthy body. We also believe in preventive care rather than curative measures for healthier and more productive lives.

‘It is our hope that today’s activities would encourage employees to undertake frequent workout sessions for a stronger, health conscious lifestyle,’ she said.
