A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hon. Osei Bonsu Amoah has slammed the Greater Accra Police for impounding motorbikes in an unlawful operation to combat crimes in the capital city.
The Greater Accra Police seized over 1,140 motorbikes on Tuesday, April 15 as part of activities to maintain law and order.
According to the Regional Police Commander DCOP Christian Tetteh Yuworno, the main objective for the operation is to clamp down on criminals who use motorbikes and also riders which are licensed.
The apprehended riders were asked to produce documents and genuine riding licenses covering their bikes. The operation has affected courier services in the capital.
Speaking on Oman FM, Hon. O.B Amoah called on the police to do the “right thing” and desist from cramming both the licensed and unlicensed riders at the various Police stations for interrogation.
He bemoaned the move by the Police to arrest every rider on the road whether with a legal or illegal right to use motorbikes. He implored the Police Command to arrest and parade only the motorbike users holding false documents.
“We should accost those who don’t have any right or any business to be on the road…That should not be the right thing because if you do such thing, you’ll affect those who are genuinely licensed and those who are authorized to be on the road,” he said.
