Collins Owusu Amankwah (in smock)
THE MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North Constituency, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has said that the Electoral Commission (EC) is just few days away from compiling another incredible voter register, ahead of the district level elections and referendum.
According to the MP, multiple registration and registration by unqualified people, the challenges which led to the promulgation of CI 72, had revealed their ugly heads in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
Addressing a press conference in Kumasi yesterday, Mr. Owusu disclosed that some of the prospective voters were using fake national identity cards and passports to register.
‘Just a couple of days ago at CS polling centre at Buokrom Estate, we detected that four people presented the same passport but with different pictures. Another incident happened at Afriyie Mensah Polling Centre yesterday [referring to Monday] morning at exactly 10:25am,’ he noted.
The Manhyia North MP alleged that he discovered inconsistencies in the voter ID numbers that were generated by the biometric registration machine at the Buokrom Town Council and CS polling centres during his visit to the centres.
He demanded an immediate explanation from the EC on the purported ambiguities and called on the registration officials to properly scrutinise passports and driving licenses being used as means of identification of eligible Ghanaian voters for the exercise.
Collins used the occasion to condemn the invasion of the Buokrom Town Council polling centre by thugs who destroyed registration machines.
‘We [members of the NPP] view such an action as totally unwarranted and a clear attempt to disrupt the electoral registration processes [in the constituency], he emphasised.
He assured members of the public of his preparedness to get to the bottom of the matter, intimating that the incident was under police investigation.
The MP urged the EC to ensure a credible, fair and clean electoral register this time around to win back the confidence of the masses.
