The MTN Ghana Foundation’s annual Valentine’s Day blood donation exercise has attracted many people including the telecom firm’s staff who turned out in their numbers to donate blood to hospitals in the country. The exercise which took place in four regional capitals was targeted at donating over 500 pints of blood from the Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale all in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, and Northern regions. The MTN’s blood donation exercise follows a numerous appeals made by the National Blood Bank of Ghana’s premier health facility-Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) and other health facilities in the country. In a short remark before the commencement of the exercise, the Executive Director of the MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor said: ‘This is the fifth time MTN Ghana is organizing a blood donation exercise and the third being done on Valentine’s Day. It is always gratifying to know that, any time we call on our staff, friends and members of the media they show up in their numbers’. The Manager In-charge of Sustainability and Social Impact at MTN Ghana, Ms Rhoderlyn Entsua-Mensah told the newspaper that chunks of the blood donated from Accra would go to the KBTH, while some of the pints of blood go to the Ridge Hospital which is not far from the MTN Ghana headquarters. On other hand, donated blood from Kumasi, and Tamale would go to the Komfo Anokye and Tamale teaching hospitals, while the Takoradi donation is meant for the Takoradi Regional Hospital, and Efia-Nkwanta health facility, she indicated. On partners of the exercise, Ms Entsua-Mensah noted that Coca Cola Bottling Company of Ghana supported the donation with drinks and water; Nestle Ghana Limited gave all blood donors some beverages including Milo and Ideal Milk; and donors were served with Perfecto Noodles. Ecobank Ghana and Merchant Bank also supported the donation with food, drinks, and water. The managers of the Korle-Bu National Blood Bank thanked MTN Ghana for heeding to their appeals and urged other corporate organisations to emulate the leading telecom service provider’s gesture.
