Minister Sacks PM
An alleged revocation of the appointment of the Presiding Member of the Kasena-Nankana West District Assembly has created confusion between some residents of the area and the Upper East Regional Minister.
Reports indicated that Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru sacked all the government appointees.
Owing to the development, a group known as the Concerned People of Kasena-Nankana West district petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over the alleged misconduct of Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru.
The group’s Spokesperson, Tuumyeridam Donald, in an interview with Citi News, claimed Alhaji Limuna’s action had incurred the wrath of residents of the area.
He recalled that ‘the Presiding Member was elected by two-thirds of the Assembly members in accordance with the provisions of the constitution. It does not therefore matter whether he is elected or appointed and one cannot therefore take the law into his hands by sacking him without the due process required for the purpose and without an iota of reason.’
He said the Regional Minister’s action created room for the confirmation of the nominated District Chief Executive (DCE) whom Alhaji Limuna suspected would have been rejected by the assembly members.
‘The issue before the Kasena Nankana West district is very critical and if care is not taken it will take us back and affect political participation and activism; the confusion that this action has engendered across the nook and cranny of the district must be a cause for worry even for the NDC.’
He pleaded with President Mahama to call the Regional Minister to order, saying ‘the President of the Republic, we believe, is oblivious of this undemocratic act meted out by the Hon Minister of the Region and we will be surprised if the President is aware and has allowed such a travesty of justice to take place in the District.’
‘Our President understands how democracy is built up and so may not support this act of revocation of the presiding member with an alleged reason that he and the other government appointees were those behind the refusal to confirm the first and second nominees of the Assembly,’ Donald stated.
He warned that the NDC risks losing the Kasena-Nankana West seat in 2012 if President Mahama fails to impress upon the Regional Minister to rescind his decision and reinstate the sacked
