Mattew Rees returns for Wales’ tour of South Africa

Rees was named in Warren Gatland’s 32-man squad that will fly out to South Africa for a two-Test tour in June after a remarkable season for the Cardiff Blues.

The 33-year-old hooker, capped 58 times by Wales, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October, which forced him to relinquish the Blues armband.

But after undergoing treatment he returned to the field in March and is now set to appear in a Wales shirt for the first time since early 2013.

Uncapped 22-year-old fly-half Matthew Morgan was also included in the squad after he caught the eye of Gatland with an impressive display in the Possibles’ loss to the Probables’ in a trial match on Friday.

“The beauty about tonight was one or two players – and particularly one – came from nowhere and came on in the second half and made an impression,” said Gatland.

“I suppose that’s the romance of the trial someone can produce something, do something and get their name on the touring sheet and I thought that was special about tonight.”

Wales open their tour of South Africa with warm-up games against Eastern Province Kings in Port Elizabeth on 10 June before going head-to-head with the Springbok in Durban four days later.
