Matteo Manassero up for title defence

The Italian became the youngest winner of the tournament last year at 20 years and 37 days, clinching victory in a sudden-death play-off with Scott Khan.

While many athletes claim they do not like watching pass successes – or, even worse, previous failures – Manassero confirmed he has his victory at Wentworth recorded and has used it as inspiration ahead of this week’s event.

“I have watched it back, I have got it recorded on my TV, I have watched it a few times to try and get inspired when my mood is down,” said Manassero, who can join the likes of Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam and Luke Donald as a multiple winner.

“I turn it on and remember really nice things and good memories.

“It’s nice, you know it feels really nice to be back here and defend this title.

“It’s a beautiful feeling and you know obviously when you are defending champion you have a few extra demands but all you focus on is to try and defend it as well as possible.

“It is also nice to speak about the past year. All the nice memories that you have it’s nice to let them out and share them with people.”

Meanwhile, German Martin Kaymer is hoping to build on his impressive run of form with victory at the European Tour event.

Kaymer ended his three-year drought without a trophy by winning The Players Championship just over a week ago.

The 29-year-old believes his return to Europe will be an advantage as he prepares for his seventh event in eight weeks.

“Obviously the win makes a difference,” he said. “But to come home and be back in Europe because I have been in America for the last seven to eight weeks and after four to five weeks you start missing Europe a little bit.

“To come here to Wentworth and play here it feels even more like home because of the history of the place, I think BMW you know they run a really good tournament here every year.

“To see familiar faces on the range and then obviously the success they’ve had recently. It adds a little bit of a good thing.”
