Massive Confidence Blow For Zambia Ahead Of Ghana Game, Zimbabwe Eliminate Them From Chan
Zambia suffered a major confidence blow ahead of their World Cup qualifying clash against Ghana when they were shockingly booted out of the CHAN competition after suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Zimbabwe on Saturday.
Zimbabwe beat Zambia 1-0 to not only dumped Chipolopolo out of the CHAN competition but made sure Zambians lost at Levy stadium for the first time since it was opened.
The Chipolopolo squad, who played in Saturday’s match, made up mainly of players plying their trade at home was one of the key strategies to be used by their coach Herve Renard when they clash with Ghana on 6 September in Kumasi.
The Frenchman was planning to use many home-based players, who are hungrier, to frustrate the Black Stars in the Kumasi game but the way they flopped at home on Saturday could force him to revise his plans or face similar humiliation in Kumasi.
Zambia went down in the 63rd minute via a Charles Sibanda goal after ,the Chipolopol0 had earlier survived a scare when a long range effort was only parried to the upright for a corner.
Zambia dominated possession in the first half but failed to carve out any meaningful chances only coming closest from a Bornwell Mwape shot which was well saved from an acute angle in the 16th minute.
Ngonga also tested the Zimbabwean keeper from long range who was up to the task as he saved well in the 42nd minute.
The half ended without the Warriors registering a shot on target.
Herve Renard rested Festus Mbewe for a lively Moses Phiri at half time but it was Zimbabwe who were more assertive going forward on the counter attack.
They made their intention known in the 57th minute when their midfielder was left loose to shoot from about 35 yards but Munyau parried the ball onto the post for Zambia to survive.
Six minutes later, captain of the side Bronson Chama failed to deal with a long harmless ball for Zimbabwe to take advantage and a square ball in the area found an on running Sibanda who made no mistake from close range.
With Zambia chasing the game, Renard brought in Kabaso Chongo for Jimmy Chisenga and Evans Kangwa for Bornwell Mwape but Zambia failed to threaten enough as chance after chance continued to go begging.
This is the second time Zambia has failed to qualify for the CHAN tournament after reaching the semi final of the inaugural tournament in 2009 while Zimbabwe has never failed to qualify.
