Magren Services to boost fruit and vegetable industry


Efforts towards a sustainable market by fruits and vegetable farmers in the country have been given a boost with the activities of Magren Services Limited.

Despite starting business a few months ago, the company has been able to provide a continuous market for fruit and vegetable farmers both in Accra and other regions of the country by buying in bulk and distributing to its network of customers.

These were revealed at a forum for industry players in the fruits and vegetable sector in Accra last month, organised by GhanaVeg.

GhanaVeg is an initiative of The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands which involves prioritising and improving commercial agriculture in Ghana in the next four years.

The forum was the second organsed by GhanaVeg and was  attended by eighty-two participants including ten members from the GhanaVeg Dutch Trade Mission.

Marketing Manager of Magren Services, Fred Baa, in a presentation at the seminar said to ensure produce from farmers the company buys from meet the standards of Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and soon to be introduced Green Label initiative, the farmers will be given periodic training with assistance from these certifying bodies.

“This would benefit all parties because maintaining a high standard of product quality, and environmentally sustainable agricultural practices, is key to retaining market share and ensuring profitability”, said Fred Baa.

The Green Label initiative when implemented will be a certification scheme that will confirm farm produce that comply with the requisite production and distribution system set out by the authority by marking them with a green logo.

Magren’s Marketing Manager added that the company’s long term vision is to work together with its supply partners to build a long term business that will provide a solid and sustainable outlet for your products.

“This will create profitability for local farmers and enable them to expand their activities even further”, he said.

The company hopes to promote Ghana made produce in markets across the world and “work towards reducing the imports of fresh fruits and vegetables which can be grown and distributed off Ghanaian farms”.
