Los Angeles Kings win Stanley Cup
Alec Martinez struck the winning goal in the 15th minute of the second overtime period as the Kings sealed a 4-1 series win.
The victory marked the Kings’ second championship in three years, while the Rangers remain without a title since 1994.
It was also the longest game in the Kings’ history, but they had to come from behind after giving up an early lead.
Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped 48 shots in game five at the Staples Center, while the Kings’ Jonathan Quick kept out 28.
Justin Williams was named the MVP thanks to 25 points in the play-offs, including seven in the finals.
Williams, the overtime hero in game one, opened the scoring for the Kings in the first period.
But two goals in five minutes in the second period had the Rangers ahead as Chris Kreider and Brian Boyle struck.
Marian Gaborik squared the clash almost midway through the third period before Martinez’s match-winner.
