A 24-year-old first-year student of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) committed suicide early yesterday morning.

The student, Solomon Obeng, was pursuing a Bachelor of Basic Education degree at the North Campus of the university.

He was found hanging in an uncompleted building near his private hostel at Abasraba, a suburb of Winneba, by neighbours around 4:30 a.m.

There was no reason assigned for his action, but sources at the university said they believed the action might have been due to Obeng’s imminent dismissal from the institution.

The student, according to the sources, had his name published on the notice board as having failed in three subjects and was set to be withdrawn.

They explained that it was the policy of the university to expel students who failed in three subjects. Investigations

The police are, however, investigating the matter.

The Winneba District Police Commander, Superintendent Rev John Opoku, told the Daily Graphic that Obeng was found hanging on a rope just close to his hostel.

According to Rev Opoku, the landlord notified the police, who quickly proceeded to the scene and found Obeng dead.

He said the police were still waiting for the bereaved family to claim the body.

Meanwhile, a military officer is alleged to have committed suicide after killing his wife who also served in the military.

The bodies of the two, Corporal Fred Nasrame and Corporal Antoinette Agbagba, were said to have been found in their residence at Michelle Camp on Friday.

Sources told Joy FM that their bodies were discovered in a locked room and had been in the room for the past two days.

The Dodowa District Police Commander, DSP Kwesi Ofori, who confirmed the incident, declined to give details, saying that investigations had started into the matter.
