Let The Nation Benefit From These Seized Goods
I wish to congratulate the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority for the eagle-eyed effort they have been applying in their operations, resulting in the arrest of many smugglers and law breakers along our borders. Customs is actually doing a great service to Mother Ghana, and I wish they will continue like that.
However, they need to make sure that all the seized goods benefit the nation, instead of destroying them.
For example, a couple of weeks ago, I saw and read from the dailies of great bundles of smuggled cloth being destroyed by burning.
I feel that since these bundles of cloth posed no health threat to the citizens, they should not have been destroyed.
Instead, they could be sold to various institutions at moderate prices, and the proceeds paid into government’s chest for development, or given to the vulnerable in the society and children’s homes as gifts.
In this way, the nation is benefiting from it.
However, there are some commodities which pose health threat to citizens such as fake and expired drugs, cigarettes, expired foods or meat, and other unwholesome goods.
These could be destroyed as usual to protect the citizenry.
