Jonathan’s Meeting With Governors, PDP Leadership Continues Today
The meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan, governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s leadership on Sunday, a day after a splinter group known as New PDP had emerged is scheduled to continue today.
The president had on Sunday held two separate meetings with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and governors of the PDP as well as the President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi.
After the meeting with the governors and the PDP leadership which ended in the early hours of Monday, the party’s Board of Trustees chairman, Chief Anenih Tony Anenih who was flanked by President Jonathan on the right and Rabiu Kwankwanso on the left with other governors behind them, read a communique to the press, saying, while the meeting was a fruitful one which is billed to continue today, the battle for the soul of the 14 years old party would continue.
He said, “This evening Mr. President, the leadership of the party and the PDP governors met today to discuss the incident that occurred during the PDP special convention on the 31st of August 2013, whereby some state delegations walked out of the convention ground to announced a faction of the party.
“The meeting was smooth and encouraging and the discussions will continue on Tuesday with all the aggrieved governors in attendance”, he added.
President Jonathan, LEADERSHIP further gathered, had first met behind closed doors with Chief Obasanjo for close to two hours in his residence at the presidential villa, Abuja before the governors, including four of the seven governors that formed the splinter group called the “New PDP” arrived. The governors were Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa and Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara State.
The G7 and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had walked out of the PDP special congress in Abuja on Saturday who consequently announced the composition of the PDP.
The other PDP governors who were also present at the meeting were Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Idris Wada (Kogi), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Jonah Jang (Plateau), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Murktar Ramalan Yero (Kaduna), Garba Umar (Taraba Acting Governor), Seidu Dakingari (Kebbi), Theodore Orji (Abia), Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe), Gabriel Suswam (Benue) and Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa).
Also present at the meeting were counsel to PDP, Joe Kyari Gadzama; National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki; Secretary to Government of the federation, Anyim Pius Anyim; Chief of Staff to the president and Mike. Oghiadhome.
