I Miss Jerry Rawlings In Times Like This – Kwamena Duncan

Kwamena Duncan, Central Regional Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described as illogical the demolition of a toll booth at the University of Ghana by the National Security Council (NSC).

The National Security Coordinator, Col. (rtd.) Larry Gbevlo Lartey on Tuesday authorized the demolition of an uncompleted tollbooth put up by the University to collect road tolls from motorists entering its campus.

According to Gbevlo Lartey, the tollbooth was wrongly cited and of a public nuisance.

Former Volta River Authority (VRA) Chief Executive, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey described the act as ferocious and has asked President John Dramani Mahama to fire him.

Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper also said it was needless and could have been handled more appropriately.

However, some students of the University have welcomed the action.

Contributing to the debate, Kwamena Duncan said on ‘Kokrokoo’ that “it is illogical…it is because he (Gbevlo Lartey) has powers that maybe the President himself may not have. He has the power to press the last button. He does what he likes at anytime”

In as much as he condemned the erection of the tollbooth, ‘the way out was not to demolish it on the blind side of the authorities (UG)’.

He does not understand why President Mahama will sit aloof while the National Security Boss acts like he holds all the power ‘to do anything at any time’ adding; “in times like this I miss Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor; they will not handle issues like what is currently going on. Kufour will show you that you have limits and as for Jerry Rawlings…”
