I Am Not Fighting Over Baby – Esi Denyoh

Rashida Abdallah Esi Denyoh
ELIZABETH ESI DENYOH, a senior nurse at the Ga south municipal hospital in the Greater Accra region, has debunked the allegation that she was in tango with rashida Abdalai, the purported biological mother of threemonth- old Joel Denyoh, who is at the centre of a controversy.

According to her, the baby was taken from her mother upon advice from a medical officer who said the baby should be detached from the mother for a while.

Mrs. Denyoh made this known in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, last Wednesday.

Giving the genesis of the story to the paper, she said Joel’s mother, Rashida, attends the same church with her at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Weija near Accra.

In 2011, Madam Gifty Pobee, grandmother of Joel together with Rashida, approached her (Denyoh’s) husband, Dr. Denyoh of the above-mentioned hospital, with a plea to accommodate her daughter Rashida, since her (Rahida’s) step father, Simons Pobee, did not want the child (Joel) to be with them.

They then agreed to accommodate the child for two weeks but it turned out to be three years.

‘Rashida stayed with the Denyoh family and virtually became part of that family,’ she said.

She alleged that during Rashida’s stay in the house, she had three still-born babies, the cost and the funeral expenses of which she claimed she and her husband bore.

When Rashida got pregnant with little Joel and she was asked who the father was, Mrs. Denyoh said, Rashida mentioned 19 men as responsible for the pregnancy and when the mother (Mrs. Pobee) was informed about the pregnancy, she allegedly brought GH¢400 to the couple (Mr. and Mrs. Denyoh) with a request to terminate

the daughter’s pregnancy.
‘We then told her that we do not entertain the act of abortion in our home and that we as Christians will take care of the daughter until she delivers safely,’ Mrs. Denyoh averred.

Rashida therefore gave birth on March 6, 2014 and was named Joel Denyoh after consulting Mrs. Pobee’s family, according to Mrs. Denyoh.

She added that during delivery Rashida also sat on the child and so the child had complications and with blood oozing from his nostrils.

The child’s mother on several occasions had thrown the child down on the floor thus endangering its life ‘so we had to hire a nanny to take proper care of the little boy at our own expense.’

According to Mrs. Denyoh, after delivery Rashida was never able to breastfeed the child so he depended on baby food the cost of which was borne by her.

In one of their medical reviews, a medical officer who attended to them, advised that the child be detached from the mother since she had scabies on her body which could affect him.

Mrs. Denyoh said she had been taking care of the child, since then and had developed some motherly love for the child.

Mrs. Denyoh, who claims to be a mother of four boys, reiterated that she was not interested in taking the child from the mother, but wanted a better future and proper care for the little boy.

The matter has since been taken to the juvenile court for hearing.

The Denyohs have also initiated a civil action against Rashida.

The case was called yesterday but adjourned to July because of technicalities as the right person was not served the civil action.
