Gov’t Won’t Hesitate To Use Force In Lower Manya If Persuasion Fails
Government says though it will use diplomacy in solving the impasse between local government authorities and the chiefs and people of Lower Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region, the law will be applied if it fails.
The chiefs and people of Lower Manya Krobo declared on Monday that they will no longer pay tolls, taxes and levies to the interim local assembly until the municipal assembly is properly constituted.
The assembly has been without elected members since 2010.
But Deputy Local Government Minister, Baba Jamal told Citi News the action by the people is illegal.
‘We will engage the people to ensure that the right things are done, we will want to as much as possible use diplomatic means to resolve the matter; but surely when persuasion fails the laws will be enforced.”
According to the Minister beyond the persuasion, the necessary enforcement will be done.
Mr. Jamal also said government is in talks with the Electoral Commission to organize local government elections for the Municipality.
‘We are engaging the Electoral Commission; an appropriate date will be fixed very soon, the process has already started. So I don’t that they will want to do anything that will jeopardize the peace of that area,” he said.
