President John Mahama says his government will ensure that locally-manufactured shoes are supplied to school children in addition to a policy that gives every pupil a free school uniform.
Mr. Mahama, who said this when he embarked on a three-day tour of Ashanti region, also promised to support Defence Industries Holding Company Limited (DIHOC) to expand its business for the local market in order to export to other countries in the region.
The President visited the premises of the company to gain first-hand information on its operations, strengths and challenges.
The fortunes of DIHOC, formerly GIHOC or Kumasi Shoe Factory took a nose-dive two decades ago and was revived after government had negotiated with the Czech government to invest in the company.
Currently, the factory produces boots for security agencies, shoes and sandals for the local market and has plans to extend its operations to other African markets when it receives the requisite capital injection to step up production.
President Mahama said purchasing shoes and sandals from DIHOC to supply to pupils would help provide the company a capital boost that would keep it in business.
He said the expansion of the factory would also create jobs for more jobs.
