The Association International des Groupes Cyclistes Professionels (AIGCP) launched an appeal after Tuesday’s stage was marred by mass confusion due to contradictory race directives.

Nairo Quintana burst down the descent of the Stelvio, despite many of the peloton believing attacks on that stretch would be not allowed due to safety reasons as thick snow fell on the mountainous stage.

As such, Quintana – for Movistar – gained the pink jersey as general classification threats Rigoberto Uran, Cadel Evans, Rafal Majka, Fabio Aru and Domenico Pozzovivo were deliberately stagnant in the peloton.

“Following this morning’s team managers meeting in Sarnonico, at the start of the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia, a delegation of the AIGCP met with RCS and the UCI commissaires,” a statement read on AIGCP’s Facebook page.

“On behalf of ALL teams, the AIGCP has specifically demanded a neutralisation of the time differences at the bottom of the descent of the Stelvio of yesterday’s stage.

“The UCI has declined this demand and stated that the results would remain unchanged. Putting procedures above fair-sportsmanship is simply unacceptable and very disappointing.”

Quintana maintained his overall advantage after Wednesday’s stage which was surprisingly won by Stefano Pirazzi.
