Ghana goalkeeper Daniel Agyei has vehemently denied that he has been released by South African top-flight side Free State Stars.
Agyei, who joined the club at the start of last season, was reported to be among the nine players released by the club on Tuesday at the end of a difficult season.
South Africa’s authoritative news website Kickoff.com carried the report that Agyei is among the released players quoting Free State Stars general manager Rantsi Mokoena http://www.kickoff.com/news/44443/free-state-stars-clearing-house-by-releasing-players .
But Agyei has vehemently denied that he has been released by the club insisting the news about his axing is fabricated by the media.
“I don’t even know where that website [name withheld] got the false information from. When I came back from South Africa, my wife was going through the internet and came across story written badly about me that my team has put me on transfer,” Agyei told Accra-based Power FM.
“I called my boss, the owner of the team and he said he doesn’t know what I’m talking about so I should ignore the internet reports because I have a return ticket to go back to South Africa in June and that I should concentrate on my work, [sic]
“I think if they had no ill intentions, they could have done better by contacting me or my club for confirmation before going out with such a fabrication,” he added.
Agyei was the first choice shot-stopper for Free States Stars before a hernia operation kept him out of action for some weeks.
Despite that he managed 18 appearances for the club and his woes were compounded when he was not selected for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil next month.
He has two years remaining on his contract with Free State Stars.
