A FEROCIOUS inferno gutted parts of Unity Hall at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi on Wednesday afternoon.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known but the paper gathered that the fire started in a room on the sixth floor and rapidly spread to other rooms.
The fire started around 3 pm and it destroyed beds and mattresses until personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene to quench it, an eye witness said.
When contacted, V.A. Ankamah Lomotey, Deputy Registrar, University Relations, KNUST, confirmed that there was fire outbreak on the sixth floor at the right wing of the Unity Hall.
He noted that fire fighters, who were immediately called, did a yeoman’s job by quenching the blaze within a short time, saying six rooms were affected.
Mr. Lomotey added that nobody was hurt mainly because the students were on vacation.
He said the cause of the fire was being investigated, stressing that the situation was under control so the public should not panic.
Another eye-witness said fire fighters rushed to Block B of Unity Hall within 15 minutes after they received a distress call.
He said the fire fighters climbed upstairs and doused the blaze with water, adding that about six rooms were gutted by the fire.
He said scores of curious people rushed to the place but they could not do anything due to the height of the building.
The eye-witness said the timely intervention of the firemen prevented the spread of the fire.
