Ex Ghana defender Sammy Kuffour says he has absolutely no problems with even ‘a 100-year-old’ playing for the Black Stars following the huge public uproar over the recall of Richard Kingson.
The Doxa Katokopia goalkeeper has been handed his first international call up in over two-years – during which period he was clubless.
But with the 35-year-old returning to regular club action with his Cypriot club, Ghana coach Akwasi Appiah has decided to bring him back to the Black Stars for the crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier against Egypt.
Kingson’s recall has stirred heated public debates – mostly on social media platforms – over whether the decision to bring him as against inviting young and emerging goalkeepers is the right move.
But ex Ghana defender and Bayern Munich legend Sammy Kuffour who doubts many Ghanaians are against Kingson’s return says the national team coaches and players must be given the benefit of the doubt to prove themselves regardless of their age.
“How many percentage [referring to the percentage of Ghanaians against Kingson’s recall]?” Kuffour quizzed.
“Sometimes we have to respect the decision of the coach. Olele [Kingson] didn’t call himself.
“So the coach called him so the coach trusts him. We have to have trust in everyone.
“It is a national team so there is competition and we need to have the best. So far as he is playing, why not?
“They are all Ghanaians. If you are 100 years and you can still play and you have the chance to play for the nation, why not?
“So we should give the benefit of the doubt to the coach and to the players.”
Kingson joined his international teammates on Tuesday night and will train with the team for the first time in over two-years at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday morning.
The ex Blackpool goalkeeper will be competing with Fatau Dauda and Adam Kwarasey for a starting place against in the crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier against Egypt on October 15 in Kumasi.
