EU Commissioner For Agric To Visit Ghana
The European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Dacian CioloÅŸ will visit Ghana from October 4th to 6th, 2013, to meet key partners of the European Union (EU) in the agricultural sector.
‘ Agriculture will be at the heart of the cooperation between the EU and Ghana during the period 2014-2020. I am pleased to discuss with decision-makers , agricultural stakeholders and academics the most effective ways to promote a strong agriculture , increasing food security and local development in Ghana while preserving natural resources’, stated Commissioner CioloÅŸ, before arriving in Accra.
The visit takes place at a crucial time for the future of agriculture in Ghana: the programing exercise for the 11 th European Development Fund is underway, and the preliminary national indicative programme has already identified sustainable agriculture, food security and nutrition as the principal focal sectors for the period 2014-2020.
In the EU, a new reform of the Common Agricultural Policy has just been concluded, and in terms of bilateral trade an Economic Partnership Agreement with West Africa is under negotiation.
The Commissioner will meet the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr C lement Kofi Humado, other ministers and representatives of farmers’ organizations .
He will also participate at a round-table discussion at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) on Friday, 4 th October, at 12:30 on the challenges, opportunities and strategies proposed to unlock the economic potential of agriculture development in Ghana.
He will on Saturday visit farms in the South-East of Ghana.
