Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien has returned to English side Chelsea after ending his loan stint with Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Any hopes of him signing a permanent deal with Real Madrid has ended with him starting pre-season training with the Blues under new boss Jose Mourinho.
Essien returned to Stamford Bridge this week following a hugely successful season-long loan spell under Mourinho at Real Madrid.
It was thought he could sign a permanent deal at Real Madrid at the end of his loan deal but he has returned to join Chelsea.
The versatile Ghanaian played both at right-back and in his familiar defensive midfield position at the Bernebeu and was one of Los Blancos’ most consistent players last season.
And the former Lyon man says he is prepared to fulfil whatever role the club needs him to, as he looks to translate his successes in La Liga back to the Premier League.
