Engineer Missing On High Seas

Binney, a 48-year-old engineer and Nana Kofi Ankobiah, a seaman, were said to have attempted to go to sea with a live boat which was said to have capsized due to the high tides. However, Ankobiah managed to come out and swam to safety but Binney was yet to be found as at press time yesterday.

According to information, on July 9, 2014, two Nigerians –   Allami and Kayode – solicited the assistance of Binney and Ankobiah to fix their vessel, MV Lotion – a fishing boat which was said to have developed some problems on the high seas, off the coast of Teshie, a suburb of Accra.

Binney and Ankobiah, who mounted the vessel, detected that the cabin, the engine room, cargo tank and pumping room were flooded.

The Ghanaians requested for water pumping machine to such way the water in the vessel so that they could work on it.

Allami and Kayode were reported to have left for the pumping machine but could not return. The following day, about 10 persons on board a speed boat purportedly came to the vessel and requested for a ladder to climb the vessel but Binney and Ankobiah refused, which allegedly resulted in hot exchanges.

One of the men on the speed boat was reported to have remarked in their language that they should go back and return in the night, which scared Binney and Ankobiah and so they vacated the fishing vessel immediately the people had left.

A live boat on the vessel was said to have been put onto the ocean to enable them sail out so that they could escape avoid the attackers who had decided to return to the place in the night.

According to reports, it was in the course of fleeing from the strange men that the high tide was alleged to have hit their boat, causing it to capsize.

Ankobiah, who managed to swim ashore, was rescued by some fisher folks along the coast of Teshie and sent to a nearby hospital while Binney was not found.

Meanwhile, information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates MV Lotion was impounded by the Ghana Navy and has been facing litigation over a year now.
